About Oyoga Chair
Oyoga is a modular seat designed for group use in shared rest areas. Unlike fixed chairs, Oyoga uses a rotating joint structure, so the layout can change from a three person seat to a six person seat according to the number of users. Each seat is a yoga ball, which adds softness and allows light exercise while sitting. A ball can also be flipped up to act as a backrest for the seat beside it. Elastic materials provide comfort, and metal connectors keep the parts stable and simple to replace. Pomegranate seeds inspired the form as a symbol of unity.
Zhejun Zhang's Oyoga Chair emerges from design traditions that celebrate the intersection of functional furniture and sculptural expression, positioning itself within contemporary explorations of kinetic seating and modular spatial objects that resist singular categorical definition, the work demonstrates sophisticated engagement with mid-twentieth-century fascinations with molecular and atomic structural beauty, recalling the optimistic modernism of designers who sought to make visible the invisible architectures of matter and energy through accessible domestic forms, the central articulated mechanism reveals considerable technical accomplishment, suggesting engineered precision in its ball-joint construction and suggesting potential for rotational adjustment or dynamic reconfiguration, allowing the spherical elements to assume varied spatial relationships, the choice of warm coral-salmon tonality for the spherical forms demonstrates chromatic intelligence, selecting a hue that communicates approachability and warmth while maintaining visual sophistication, the near-monochromatic color strategy unified by subtle tonal variation creates cohesive visual identity while metallic accents in silver and rose-gold tones provide material contrast and structural legibility, compositional achievement lies in balancing radial symmetry impulses with deliberate asymmetric distribution, the spheres neither rigidly arrayed nor randomly scattered but thoughtfully positioned to create visual rhythm and directionality, the reflective circular base functions both as literal structural support and as compositional element that doubles and inverts the form, extending visual interest into the lower register and creating dialogue between object and reflection, surface treatment across the spherical elements appears exceptionally refined with seamless matte finish suggesting either advanced polymer molding or meticulous spray finishing, thematic content appears to explore ideas of connectivity, modularity, potential for transformation, and the beauty inherent in structural systems, the spheres might invite interpretation as nodes in a network, cells in an organism, planets in orbital relationship, or simply as pure geometric forms appreciated for their formal qualities alone, the work seems to investigate how functional objects can transcend utility to occupy aesthetic territory traditionally reserved for sculpture, questioning boundaries between art furniture and spatial installation, the engineering visibility of the central joint mechanism rather than concealment suggests celebration of technical means and transparency of construction, aligning with design philosophies that honor material truth and structural expression, one might observe how the piece negotiates between industrial precision and organic warmth, between geometric abstraction and biomorphic suggestion, between static object and implied kinetic potential, inviting viewers to consider how we assign meaning to form, how engineering serves beauty, and how objects designed for human interaction can simultaneously function as contemplative visual experiences.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- Although traditional chairs are usually fixed, Oyoga uses a rotating joint structure, allowing it to change shape according to the number of people or the usage scenario, from a three-person seat to a six-person seat, providing users with more flexible usage. Oyoga incorporates design elements of yoga balls to enhance health functionality. Users can do some light exercises while sitting and can easily remove them when replacement is needed.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- Central column height: 0.6 m
Yoga ball diameter: 0.8 m
Rotating rod length: 1.1 m
Modular connector size: 0.2m × 0.1m - Tags
- Flexible, Interactive, Comfortable, Sustainable, Versatile
- Production Technology
- Oyoga uses a combination of elastic materials and yoga balls to provide a more comfortable sitting experience, and the connector is made of metal, which is not easy to shift when replaced, and is more robust.
- Design Challenge
- The design of the Oyoga involves a rotating and deformable seat structure, so ensuring the safety of the mechanical structure is crucial.
- Project Duration
- At present, our project has successfully established a cooperative relationship with China Academy of Art, and contacted manufacturers to carry out large-scale production of products. Pass with various college cafes (Heh Heh star people, big black house...) After in-depth communication and coordination, the person in charge decided to make full use of the idle rest space outside the cafe and carefully arrange the seat products designed by us, aiming to provide a comfortable and convenient rest environment to attract more students of China Academy of Art who are eager to relax after intense learning to come to consume experience.
- Operation Flow
- We designed a deformable, multifunctional seat with a rotating spherical connector that changes the shape of the seat. Users can flexibly adjust the shape of the seat according to the number of people and scene needs, from three seats to six seats. The yoga ball is connected to the base by a rotating mechanical structure that allows the seat to be flipped up as a backrest for the seat next to it. OYoga simply uses mechanical splicing to put all the pieces together.
- Research
- Focused on transforming a yoga ball from a solo activity to a group interaction while ensuring comfort and fun, a fun interactive multi-functional yoga chair aims to address this problem, collecting data through field research, surveys and random interviews, our team identified key elements such as wellness, interaction and fun through mood boards and mind maps. The study guided the design of the Oyoga multi-person yoga chair, highlighting the need for open, interactive Spaces, using a modular, deformable design with rotating and connected seats that can change layout for group use and interaction, and the final design using yoga ball materials and rotary connectors that allow the seat to deform during use. Increase the fun and interactivity during breaks.
- Inspiration
- We have designed a multi-functional yoga chair, aiming to promote interaction and entertainment. By utilizing the flexibility of elastic materials and the softness of yoga balls, it offers a comfortable and adaptable seating option, allowing users to experience the perfect blend of health and fun during activities. Inspired by pomegranate seeds, its design symbolizes unity and friendship, and this chair can accommodate multiple people.
