About Parachute Wall Shelf

Parachute is a wall shelf made of sheet metal. When a section is in use, the plank of that section drops down and hangs in place. The hanging plank holds a coat, a magazine or similar items and keeps them from falling. The surface carries colored stripes separated by thin spaces, so the shelf recalls the graphic appearance of a modern parachute and can also be read as wall art. Parachute measures 790 mm in width, 30 mm in depth and 220 mm in height. The name joins the ideas of protecting and falling.

Parachute Wall Shelf by Yusuke Watanabe exemplifies the contemporary furniture design movement's engagement with transformation, adaptability, and material poetry, emerging from a tradition that values objects capable of responding dynamically to human needs while maintaining aesthetic integrity in all states of use, the work demonstrates remarkable technical accomplishment in its engineering of the accordion mechanism that allows seamless expansion and contraction, the graduated color progression from ethereal translucence through warm flesh tones to vibrant orange suggesting the arc of dawn light or the unfurling of natural forms such as flower petals or butterfly wings, this chromatic journey appears carefully calibrated to create visual warmth and spatial energy within domestic environments, the designer seems to engage with longstanding conversations in furniture design regarding the relationship between object and user, between static form and kinetic potential, the choice to photograph the piece held by a human figure rather than mounted on a wall emphasizes its approachable scale and the intimate relationship between furniture and the bodies that interact with it, the title itself evokes associations with descent, safety, and controlled landing, perhaps suggesting how this shelf might gently receive and protect precious objects while simultaneously referencing the billowing fabric forms of actual parachutes, one might observe connections to the paper lantern traditions of various cultures, the bellows of musical instruments, and the pleated structures found throughout architectural history from Gothic fan vaults to contemporary parametric facades, the work invites consideration of how furniture design can transcend mere utility to become a source of daily visual pleasure and contemplation

Inspiration
When listening to Coldplay's first album, it suddenly occurred to me to look up the word "Parachute."

It seems that the name "parachute" comes combining the Italian "parare" (to protect) with the French "chute" (to fall).

I thought that was a rather fine name.
I tried to think of devices that protect against falling.
