About Patia Striped Trash Can
Patia is a pedal operated trash can designed for kitchen use. The vertical stripes on the body act as reinforcing ribs. The convex and concave pattern raises strength and helps prevent denting during transport. The body is made of cold rolled steel, cut by laser and shaped on a continuous rolling line. The lid and the footrest are formed by stamping dies. A light step on the pedal opens the lid slowly, and the lid then returns to its closed position, so contact with the inside of the can is avoided. Patia measures 400 mm in width, 330 mm in depth and 622 mm in height.
Ziel Home Furnishing Technology Co., Ltd's Patia Striped Trash Can represents a thoughtful engagement with the tradition of elevating utilitarian objects through rigorous formal refinement and material consideration, a design philosophy that traces lineage through Scandinavian functionalism, Bauhaus material honesty, and Japanese minimalist aesthetics where everyday implements receive the same design attention historically reserved for prestige objects, the work demonstrates how vertical fluting, a decorative vocabulary inherited from classical architecture through Art Deco design, translates into contemporary product language creating optical vitality and tactile interest across the cylindrical form while maintaining the geometric clarity essential to modern industrial design, the approximately forty parallel channels machined or formed into the metallic surface establish rhythmic repetition that activates light through directional reflection, each vertical element catching illumination differently depending on viewing angle and light source position thus generating dynamic visual behavior from static geometry, this surface treatment serves multiple functions simultaneously providing decorative interest, disguising fingerprints and minor surface imperfections common to smooth metallic finishes, adding structural rigidity through corrugation, and creating subtle grip texture facilitating handling, the material selection of brushed stainless steel or similar corrosion-resistant alloy signals durability, hygiene, and contemporary sophistication while the satin finish mediates between the clinical associations of high-polish metal and the utilitarian plainness of matte surfaces, the stepped lid profile introduces architectural complexity suggesting influence from tiered forms in Art Deco skyscrapers and geometric pottery while providing functional advantages in concealment and structural stability, the integration within the photographed environment demonstrates contextual sensitivity with the warm walnut cabinetry and cool marble creating material dialogue that positions the receptacle as design object rather than mere functional necessity, the ceramic vessels and botanical elements extend this material conversation introducing organic counterpoint to the geometric precision of manufactured forms, the composition invites consideration of how domestic environments construct meaning through object selection and arrangement, how utilitarian items contribute to spatial atmosphere, and how thoughtful design transforms necessity into aesthetic opportunity, the work suggests that waste management, often relegated to invisible utility, can participate in visible domestic composition when form quality merits display rather than concealment, the vertical emphasis created by both the fluted pattern and the overall proportions lends the object architectural presence appropriate to its scale, the neutral metallic palette ensures compatibility across diverse interior schemes while the linear surface treatment provides sufficient visual interest to function as sculptural accent when compositional context supports such reading, viewers might contemplate how this design balances the competing demands of functional performance, manufacturing feasibility, material durability, aesthetic refinement, and contextual integration, or how everyday objects shape our daily sensory experience through material choices and formal decisions, what possibilities emerge when designers approach humble utilitarian objects with the same formal rigor applied to furniture or architectural elements, and how material quality and surface refinement transform our relationship with functional necessities in domestic space.

- Unique Properties
- The core innovation of this product lies in the combination of structural reinforcing ribs and decorative stripes into one. Through precise mechanical calculation and structural design, and by using the convex and concave elements of the stripes on the barrel body, it serves as a reinforcing rib for the product, preventing it from deforming during transportation. At the same time, it enhances the aesthetic appeal of the product and distinguishes it from other products on the market.

- Production Technology
- The barrel body of the Patia product is made of 0.6mm cold-rolled steel plate, which is precisely cut by laser and formed into a striped structure in one go through a 16-station continuous rolling line. The depth of the convex ribs is 8mm±0.1mm, with a tolerance of, and is made by high-precision die stamping. The bucket lid and footrests are formed by stamping dies in one piece. Bottom
- Design Challenge
- The greatest challenge in the process of implementation and research is how to enhance the strength of the product barrel while maintaining its aesthetic appeal, ensuring safety and rationality, as well as integrating it into the home environment. Finally, through continuous refinement of the 3D model and sample verification, this striped trash can was designed.
- Project Duration
- The project started in Shenzhen in October 2024 and will be completed in Shenzhen in June 2025.
- Operation Flow
- Operating this type of trash can is very simple and intuitive. The user only needs to gently step on the trash can lid, and it will automatically slowly lower and open without the need for manual lifting. After putting away the garbage, the lid will automatically return to its original position. The entire process does not require touching the inside of the trash can, effectively preventing hand contamination and the spread of odors.
- Research
- Market research has found that most similar products remain at the stage of undesigned smooth surface treatment, which is prone to deformation during transportation. Moreover, they are homogenized and lack a sense of design. We have innovatively adopted 0.8mm thickened cold-rolled steel plates. Through a precise rolling process, the stripes present a three-dimensional drop of 10mm, which not only enhances the compressive resistance but also improves the product's aesthetic appeal.
- Inspiration
- Traditional metal trash cans usually dent and deform due to impact during transportation. The load-bearing structure in buildings inspires us to transform functional reinforcing ribs into decorative stripes. Each concave and convex vertical pattern is not only the "skeleton" of the barrel, supporting the stability of the product, but also creating a sense of rhythm through the refraction of light and shadow.
