About Pitcher Set Wine or Soft Drink Service

Introducing the Pitcher Set: a harmonious blend of elegance and light. The Swan Carafe, with its fluid curves and graceful form, embodies the refined beauty of its namesake. Designed for effortless pouring, it ensures a seamless flow of water and beverages. Inspired by the ethereal glow of fireflies, the Firefly Goblet features a translucent glaze technique that plays with light, adding a captivating visual depth to any drink. Entirely handcrafted, this exquisite set brings an artistic touch to the table while remaining perfectly suited for everyday use.

OKAN OVACIK's Pitcher Set Wine or Soft Drink Service exemplifies contemporary ceramic design's ongoing dialogue with mid-twentieth-century modernist ideals, positioning functional domestic vessels within the elevated discourse traditionally reserved for sculptural objects while maintaining unwavering commitment to utilitarian purpose and ergonomic integrity. This thoughtfully conceived ensemble demonstrates sophisticated understanding of proportion systems, volumetric relationship, and chromatic restraint, qualities that align the work with enduring design traditions spanning from early twentieth-century Bauhaus functionalism through Scandinavian postwar modernism to Japanese mingei folk craft philosophy, all movements that sought to dissolve artificial boundaries between art and daily life by investing quotidian objects with aesthetic intention and material sensitivity. The dominant pitcher form achieves notable compositional success through its confident vertical emphasis and gracefully attenuated silhouette, the vessel's hourglass contraction creating visual dynamism while suggesting both structural logic and organic growth patterns, a formal strategy that recalls ceramic traditions from ancient amphora forms to contemporary studio pottery while maintaining distinctly modern sensibility through its refined proportional relationships and minimal surface decoration. The pale chartreuse glaze selection represents particularly accomplished chromatic decision-making, this yellow-green tonality residing in a sophisticated middle ground between warm citrine and cool celadon, a hue that evokes natural associations with new growth, spring vitality, and botanical freshness while maintaining sufficient restraint to support rather than overwhelm the work's formal presence, the matte surface finish enhancing tactile appeal and preventing reflective distraction from the vessels' sculptural qualities. The complementary drinking vessels demonstrate design intelligence through their bicolor construction strategy, the chartreuse foot echoing the pitcher's body while establishing visual continuity across the set, while the translucent white upper bowls introduce textural variation through delicate stippled surface treatment, this textural decision serving multiple purposes including enhanced grip during use, visual interest upon close examination, and subtle light diffusion creating gentle luminosity within the vessel interiors. The attenuated handle emerging from the pitcher's shoulder exemplifies refined attention to human factors and gestural consideration, its generous C-curve arc providing comfortable finger accommodation while maintaining visual elegance through consistent cross-sectional thickness and graceful proportional relationship to the vessel body, the handle's attachment points carefully positioned to ensure balanced weight distribution during pouring while creating pleasing negative space that contributes to the overall composition's rhythmic flow. The dramatically angled pouring spout terminating the pitcher's neck represents both functional optimization and sculptural gesture, this asymmetrical element introducing directional energy and dynamic tension within the otherwise balanced composition while serving the practical purpose of controlled liquid delivery, the spout's precise angle suggesting careful consideration of pour mechanics and user experience. What seems particularly noteworthy about this design lies in its successful negotiation between competing demands: contemporary aesthetic sensibilities and timeless formal principles, sculptural presence and functional necessity, visual sophistication and approachable domesticity, industrial refinement and handcraft warmth, chromatic distinctiveness and chromatic restraint. The work invites consideration of how design excellence in utilitarian objects enriches daily experience, transforming routine acts of beverage service into mindful rituals and aesthetic encounters, suggesting that beauty need not reside exclusively in rarefied art contexts but can permeate domestic life through objects that honor both use and contemplation. How might such vessels alter the experience of gathering, serving, and sharing, elevating ordinary moments through the quiet presence of thoughtfully conceived form?

Production Technology
It is produced by casting liquid mud into a plaster mold. It was baked in an electric oven at 1230 degrees. All raw materials used are harmless to human health and are suitable for food contact and dishwasher use.
Design Challenge
The porcelain I use in production shrinks by a total of 20% when it reaches its final state after firing. This high shrunken one is the most challenging step for the swan I produced with the mould. It is very difficult to take the dried product out of the mold and dry it without cracking by calculating its shrinkage after casting, it requires special, sensitivity and attention.
Project Duration
The project duration is eight months. I started in November 2023 and completed the final version in May 2024. The design was designed and produced in Monte Porcelain Ayvalık workshop.
Operation Flow
The design was colored considering the suitability of white porcelain, also called bone porcelain, for food contact. It was cast in a plaster mold with liquid mud, and firefly patterns were engraved on the glasses with a special technique. Since firefly patterns are filled with glaze, they do not leak liquid and allow light to play. The nature used in this entire process was treated fairly and no living creature was harmed.
Research
The mouth design was made at a certain angle to prevent leakage from your mouth during use. The neck diameter was designed with special calculations to ensure that the jug, especially for beverages such as wine, can be ventilated correctly when emptied into the drinker. It has an angle that supports the handle not being folded by hand. By heating or cooling the porcelain, it makes it easier to serve the drink for a long time by keeping it at the right temperature.
Inspiration
Classically used sirahs or carafes and goblets are produced with glass. It was produced to create an alternative to porcelain and at the same time to add a decorative and artistic touch with the high production taste of the craftsman.
