About Reconstruction in Pudong Shanghai Hospital
Reconstruction in Pudong Shanghai is the reconstruction and expansion of an outpatient and emergency medical technology complex at a public hospital in Shanghai, China. The design joins new construction with the complexity of rebuilding an active site. The work is divided into four stages: demolition, transition, reconstruction and restoration. Temporary and converted existing buildings keep medical services running during the transition stage. The facade uses white aluminum panels, with wood grain aluminum panels at the corners, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

- Unique Properties
- This project is reconstruction and expansion project of the outpatient and emergency medical Technology complex building of the People's Hospital in Pudong New District, Shanghai, China. It has the modernity of new buildings and the complexity of reconstruction and expansion. The generation of the building is post-occupancy evaluation combined with Chinese traditional Yin-Yang theory.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- the project is with buildings scale of 135,357 square meters and an area of 45,108.7 square meters

- Production Technology
- The facade of the building is made of 2 kinds of aluminum plate. Mainly uses white aluminum. In the conner of the facades, architects use wood grain aluminum plate. Floor-to-ceiling windows are widely used by the new building.
- Design Challenge
- Transition project stage: In order to demolish the existing buildings in the new building land, the form of temporary turnover needs to be adopted. Architects transformed function of office buildings and wards to outpatient units. In order to meet the needs of normal business development during the transition period, 3,200 square meters of temporary buildings were built and 13,199 square meters of existing buildings were integrated and transformed. Restoration and renovation project stage: demolish the science and education building, dormitory building, Meixian building, ground machinery garage, activity center (canteen), east gate guard, garbage room, etc. on the red line of the transition project site; demolish the temporarily built outpatient building in the site.
- Project Duration
- The project started in May 2018 and will be finished in 2025 in Shanghai, China.
- Operation Flow
- The hospital is operated by the government. Due to the outdated construction facilities of the outpatient building and medical technology building, and insufficient functional space, the medical process cannot meet the service demand. The architects carried out the reconstruction and expansion of the outpatient and emergency medical technology complex building on the basis of the demolition of the existing outpatient building, medical technology building and other old buildings in the People's Hospital of Pudong New Area.
- Research
- Due to the particularity of the reconstruction and expansion projects, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth post-occupancy evaluation of the existing functions and environment.Due to the particularity of the hospital building, it is necessary to adopt systematic concepts and methods. The hospital building includes three basic processes of human flow, logistics, and information flow. From the overall planning and single plan design, specific analysis should be made for different types of human flow and logistics according to the difficulties of hospital construction. Architects decided to Step-by-step implementation of construction, Demolition-Transition-Reconstruction-Restoration.
- Inspiration
- In order to build a large-scale modern hospital in China, the project reconstructs and expanses an outpatient and emergency medical technology complex building. Design adjusted functional optimization overall of the new and old buildings to achieve four design goals: Change the current existing traffic system and functional process problems; Build the hospital's aortic traffic; Strengthen the positioning and construction of key departments; improve the hospital environment and quality.
