About Ripples Tableware

Ripples is a collection of serving trays designed for use at home and outdoors. The trays explore perception and reflection, and they change the way a space is seen. The color of each tray appears to shift when the tray is viewed from different angles, which creates an interactive visual effect. The forms are made by three-dimensional printing and are then painted. Two sizes are offered, 40 by 40 by 3.8 centimeters and 22 by 22 by 2.5 centimeters. The collection uses an experimental approach to color and visual presentation.

Bo Zhang's Ripples Tableware emerges from a rich tradition of geometric abstraction applied to functional objects, wherein the designer appears to engage thoughtfully with movements spanning from the Bauhaus commitment to unifying art and craft through De Stijl's explorations of primary color and geometric form to the optical investigations of mid-century perceptual art. The hexagonal format itself suggests an appreciation for natural mathematical structures, echoing honeycomb geometries and crystalline formations while departing from conventional circular or rectangular tableware conventions. The diagonal striping demonstrates remarkable precision in its execution, with each band maintaining consistent width and parallel alignment across the dimensional surfaces of the vessels, a technical achievement requiring sophisticated manufacturing processes or meticulous handcraft. The chromatic program reveals considered intentionality: the indigo and cream pairing evokes classical ceramic traditions including Delftware and transferware patterns, while the yellow and indigo combination introduces an energetic contemporary note that transforms the smaller vessel into a visual exclamation point. The raised dimensional quality of the stripes adds tactile interest that rewards both visual and physical engagement, suggesting the designer's awareness that tableware participates in multisensory dining experiences. The surrounding arrangement positions these functional objects within contexts of hospitality and nourishment, the amber beverage and ruby pomegranate seeds activating associations of abundance and convivial gathering. One might observe how the work bridges decorative art traditions and contemporary design practice, honoring pattern-making heritage while asserting a distinctly modern voice through bold scale and confident color deployment. Viewers are invited to consider how geometric pattern transforms utilitarian objects into occasions for aesthetic contemplation and daily delight.

Unique Properties
The Ripples collection plays with perception and reflection in a way that challenges the viewer’s understanding of space. It creates a fantastic feeling of visual magic.

The designer started from the characteristics of "changing" ,including the change of vision, surface, color, etc., and developed tray with new value, which is suitable for home and outdoor. The inspiration comes from the fun of visual angle, space folding and color change itself.
