About Ruman Origin Farmstead Architecture
Ruman Origin Farmstead is a rural building complex located in a rice paddy field on the edge of Chengdu. The farmstead has three courtyards. The first courtyard is a wooden reception space built in the traditional manner of Western Sichuan. The second courtyard holds a restaurant and a multifunctional space. The third courtyard is an independent dwelling with solar panels, ground source heat pumps, rammed earth facades and double layer doors and windows. The total construction area is 1200 square meters.
Xinyao Han's Ruman Origin Farmstead Architecture emerges from deep traditions of East Asian timber construction while demonstrating contemporary design intelligence in heritage interpretation and spatial choreography, the work participates in centuries-old building practices where post-and-beam wooden frameworks create flexible modular spaces organized around central courtyards that serve as the social and spiritual heart of domestic compounds, the architectural achievement here lies in the masterful orchestration of threshold experiences where the viewer is positioned beneath a protective colonnade looking toward the main hall across a carefully proportioned courtyard, creating a sequence of spatial compressions and releases that characterizes the finest examples of traditional compound architecture, technically the construction displays remarkable joinery expertise visible in the precisely fitted timber connections and the elegant upturned roof profiles achieved through complex bracketing systems, the weathered patina of the wooden surfaces speaks to material authenticity and the graceful aging that distinguishes genuine heritage structures from superficial reproductions, thematically the work engages with fundamental questions of dwelling and belonging, the relationship between individual shelter and communal gathering, the dialogue between interior refuge and exterior openness, and the transmission of cultural memory through built form, the lattice screens filtering light into the interior spaces evoke traditional paper window screens while the stone courtyard pavement grounds the composition in earth and permanence, iconographically the axial arrangement with its progression toward the central hall references ceremonial and hierarchical spatial traditions while the human-scaled proportions and welcoming threshold suggest warmth rather than intimidation, viewers might contemplate how architecture shapes social relationships and how inherited building wisdom continues to offer lessons for contemporary practice

- 3 Courtyard stands out from 1 and 2 Courtyards as a future minded, energy efficient, contemporary, eco friendly homestead. It is built using conventional materials and methods, and its roof comes with solar PV panels, along with ground source heat pumps, to fulfill the energy requirements for living. Additionally, it infuses features like raised floors, rammed earth facades, inner courtyards with patios, and double layer hollow door and window systems to drastically decrease energy usage.
- Design Challenge
- Integrating modern functions into the design, without compromising traditional features, is a challenging task. While maintaining the traditional architectural characteristics, modern architectural techniques and facilities are incorporated into the traditional structure through technological advancements and creative design. The attempt to retain historical features, architectural skills, and to pass on local history and culture pose immense challenges.
- Project Duration
- The design and planning work began on February 2020 and concluded on June 2022 in Chengdu. Subsequently, construction commenced on December 2020 and wrapped up on June 2023, also in Chengdu.
- Operation Flow
- 1 Courtyard, located at the entrance, is a purely wooden structure that embodies the traditional aesthetics and historical value of ancient Western Sichuan buildings, serving as a reception space. 2 Courtyard is a modern restaurant and multi-functional space, symbolizing the openness and functionality of modern design. 3 Courtyard is an independent dwelling unit that combines tradition and modernity, standing for the exploration and practice of a sustainable lifestyle in the future.
- Research
- The design team engaged in an extensive research with local residents of various age groups and professional backgrounds to gather diverse needs and feedback. By analyzing local living patterns, habits, social interactions, and cultural practices, the team aims to develop an architectural design that is unique to the region and blends well with the surroundings, setting an innovative example of rural architectural design.
- Inspiration
- With an increasing number of individuals migrating from rural areas to urban centers, urban residents are becoming weary of the hectic city life and are longing to retreat to the serene countryside. Hence, this dwelling was established in a field located on the fringes of the city. Blending the rustic plain charm of the countryside with the modern amenities of urban living, it caters to various purposes such as accommodation, exhibiting, social gatherings, and living quarters.
