About Rural Student Friendly Multifunctional Lamp

Rural Student Friendly is a multifunctional lamp designed for students in rural areas of China, where night lighting is often limited. The lamp combines three functions: a desk light for study, a flashlight for outdoor use at night, and an ambient light. The lamp body is pulled up and rotated to set the angle, and it locks in place when released. A short press of the button changes the light color, and a long press adjusts the brightness. The housing is made of recycled aluminum alloy, cast and then sandblasted for durability. The lamp stands 25 cm high.

Bihui Peng's Rural Student Friendly Multifunctional Lamp emerges from a design tradition that honors function, accessibility, and the profound dignity of everyday objects that serve human learning and aspiration, positioning itself within lineages extending from Bauhaus functionalism through mid-century Scandinavian humanism to contemporary universal design philosophy, where form derives legitimacy from use and beauty arises naturally from honest material expression and thoughtful problem-solving rather than applied decoration or stylistic gesture. The design demonstrates compositional intelligence through its systematic formal vocabulary of cylindrical volumes, precise radii, and carefully proportioned segments that create visual coherence across three distinct configurations, each variation revealing different facets of the lamp's transformative character while maintaining unmistakable family resemblance through consistent material treatment, edge detailing, and geometric discipline, the brushed aluminum surfaces achieving technical merit through their refined finish quality that balances durability with tactile appeal, the subtle directionality of the brushed grain adding visual interest while disguising minor surface imperfections that inevitably accumulate through daily handling, the matte black elastomeric aperture rings providing both functional light control and chromatic punctuation that anchors the eye and establishes focal hierarchy. The articulated mechanism visible in the leftmost configuration speaks to mechanical ingenuity, suggesting thoughtful engineering that enables angular adjustment for task-specific illumination while maintaining structural integrity through repeated repositioning cycles, the exposed pivot architecture celebrating rather than concealing the functional logic that animates the design, transforming utilitarian mechanism into expressive formal element that communicates adaptability and user agency. Thematically, the work engages questions of accessibility, equity, and design democracy, addressing through material choices and formal restraint the real constraints faced by students in resource-limited contexts who require reliable, affordable, multifunctional tools that maximize utility within minimal footprints and modest budgets, the lamp's capacity to transform from compact vertical monument to extended horizontal beam suggesting accommodation of varied study postures, spatial contexts, and task requirements, whether illuminating textbook pages on crowded dormitory desks, providing ambient glow in shared sleeping quarters after communal lights-out, or serving as portable companion during evening study sessions in library corners or outdoor gathering spaces. The design invites viewers to consider how industrial design can function as quiet advocacy, advancing social good through objects that refuse ostentatious display in favor of steadfast service, embodying values of resourcefulness, durability, repairability, and long-term relationship rather than disposable consumption, asking observers to contemplate the ethics embedded in form decisions, material selections, and manufacturing processes that either enable or foreclose access to the tools of learning and self-advancement, wondering what role designers bear in shaping a more equitable material culture where well-designed functional beauty belongs not exclusively to privileged consumers but extends to all who seek knowledge, growth, and the simple human right to adequate light for reading, writing, and the intimate work of becoming.

Production Technology
Lighting control: The intelligent control module of the lamp can recognize the user's quick and long press operation, and realize the switching of light color and brightness adjustment through microcontroller programming.
Production process: The shell adopts metal casting technology, which is a cost-effective and efficient method, suitable for large-scale production.
Surface Treatment: In order to improve the durability and aesthetics of the product, the surface of the shell is sandblasted.
Material selection: The shell is made of secondary recycled aluminum alloy, which is not only economical, but also has good strength and corrosion resistance, and at the same time embodies the concept of environmental protection.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge we faced during the development of the project was how to achieve multifunctional integration and user-friendliness while remaining cost-effective. By working with the local community, we gained an in-depth understanding of the actual needs of our users and conducted several prototype tests to optimize the design.
Project Duration
The project started in Jieyang City in April 2024 and was completed in Shenzhen City in August 2024.
Operation Flow
Lighting mode switching method: Pull up the lamp body and rotate it to the appropriate angle. After releasing it, the lamp body will automatically rebound downwards and lock the angle.
Light adjustment method: Quickly press the button to switch the light color, and hold down the button for a long time to adjust the light brightness.
Research
Rural areas in China lack complete lighting facilities, especially outdoors at night and toilets at night. This makes the lives of rural students inconvenient. We have designed this multi-functional lighting fixture that is friendly to rural students in response to this situation.
