About San Liang Jiang Beverage
San Liang Jiang is packaging for a liquor inspired by the culture of Sanxingdui, an ancient site in Chinese history. The ceramic bottle takes its form from a bronze human face, and the upper part of the bottle can be used as a cup. Spray paint and gold stamping are applied to the surface, and black is the main colour. The bottle is wrapped in a clay-like material and placed inside a convex tin box measuring 250 by 175 by 100 millimetres. Small shovels, brushes and hammers are included, so the bottle is uncovered like an excavated relic.
Within the constellation of contemporary packaging design that draws upon deep cultural wellsprings, this presentation system for a traditional beverage emerges as a particularly accomplished synthesis of ancestral artistic vocabulary and contemporary material sophistication. The designer appears to have engaged profoundly with mask-making traditions, translating the archetypal power of ceremonial face representations into a functional vessel that transcends mere containment to become a sculptural object worthy of display and contemplation. The technical achievement evidenced here demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to surface finish variation, contrasting the luminous depth of the vessel's lacquered appearance against the tactile restraint of the matte box exterior, creating a dialogue between revealed and concealed, between precious object and protective enclosure. The embossed mask relief on the presentation box establishes visual continuity while maintaining hierarchical distinction, the impression suggesting memory or echo of the dimensional original contained within. The chromatic strategy employs profound restraint, allowing the single crimson accent to function with the intensity of a seal or ceremonial mark against the dominant black field, while the cream vertical band introduces warmth and grounds the composition in calligraphic tradition. The typographic treatment suggests reverence for brush-stroke heritage, each character bearing the gestural memory of traditional ink application translated into contemporary printing. One might observe how the rounded rectangular form of the box softens industrial production into something approaching handcraft sensibility, while the vessel's anthropomorphic presence invites relationship rather than mere consumption. The viewer is invited to consider how packaging might elevate the quotidian act of drinking into ritual participation, transforming commercial transaction into cultural engagement.
