About Serpentinata Benjamin Pen
Serpentinata Benjamin is a ballpoint pen produced with 3D printing. All parts except the refill are 3D printed. The pen is transparent when new and gradually turns yellow with use, especially when exposed to sunlight. Yellowing of plastic under ultraviolet light is usually seen as a defect in industrial products, and Serpentinata Benjamin treats the change as a positive quality. Each pen develops its own color over time, in the way that musical instruments, leather goods and wooden furniture age with their owners. The pen measures 9.5 by 9.5 by 105 millimeters including the cap.
The Serpentinata Benjamin Pen by KAIRI EGUCHI represents a distinguished achievement in contemporary object design, merging the ancient tradition of fine writing instruments with advanced additive manufacturing technologies to create forms previously impossible through conventional production methods. This work emerges from a rich lineage of decorative arts that celebrates the writing implement as both functional tool and aesthetic object worthy of contemplation, recalling the elaborate penwork of historical periods while projecting firmly into twenty-first-century material possibilities. The serpentine twist that characterizes the central body of each pen evokes multiple art historical references, from the figura serpentinata of Mannerist sculpture with its spiraling, flame-like ascent, to the intertwined forms found in Celtic metalwork and the double helix structures that underpin biological existence itself. The designer demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to material expression, allowing the inherent optical properties of the chosen resins to participate actively in the aesthetic experience through their capacity to gather, transmit, and transform light. The juxtaposition of crystalline clarity against warm amber tones within the pair suggests a dialogue between coolness and warmth, neutrality and richness, while the consistent matte black grips provide visual anchoring and tactile orientation for the user. One notes the precision of the helical passages where gilt linear elements trace the spiral pathways, introducing a precious metal reference that elevates the objects beyond mere utility into the realm of treasured possession. The work invites consideration of how contemporary fabrication methods might serve not merely efficiency but expanded formal vocabularies, enabling the realization of complex geometries that honor craft traditions while embracing technological possibility. What relationship might the viewer perceive between the organic spiraling forms and the precision of their digital origin?

- Unique Properties
- Depending on the material, plastic can turn yellow under the influence of ultraviolet rays. This phenomenon, known as “yellowing,” was originally frowned upon and regarded as a bad thing for industrial products.
The 3D printed ballpoint pen “Serpentinata Benjamin,” is designed to tackle this new interpretation of plastic. It reinterprets the negative phenomenon of yellowing plastic into a positive one. - Dimensions & Packaging
- W9.5 × D9.5 × H105mm (including cap)
- Tags
- 3dprinting, pen, stationery, plastic, yellowing
- Production Technology
- All parts of the pen aside from the pen refill all use 3D-printing technology. The newly 3D-printed pens are transparent in color at first, and later turns yellow the more exposed it is. The yellowed pen in the picture takes place six months after use.
- Project Duration
- This project started at Japan.
- Operation Flow
- The pen will be transparent in color when the user first start using the product. It will then turn yellow the longer you use it, especially when exposed to the sun.
- Inspiration
- Products such as musical instruments, small leather goods, and wooden furniture that are used by people over a long period of time become their own unique colors. This ballpoint pen will age with the user through long use, and each piece will take on its own personality. This is a special ballpoint pen that contains the pleasure of nurturing for long usage.
