About Signal Pendant Jewelry
Signal is a pendant designed to move with the wearer. The main framework is inspired by neuron networks and forms a three-dimensional structure. Joint clasps are integrated into the upper and lower sections, and the weight is distributed so that both parts sway during movement. The pendant is made of recycled 925 sterling silver. Production begins with hand sketches and wax models, followed by 3D printing, vacuum casting and hand polishing to a mirror-like shine. Attached silver chains can be adjusted in length for different looks.
CHAN,HSIAO-CHING's Signal Pendant Jewelry engages the enduring conversation between architecture and ornament, translating the spatial logic of three-dimensional structural systems into the intimate scale of personal adornment, this sculptural pendant participates in a long lineage of jewelry design that seeks to transcend decorative function and claim status as wearable art, suggesting dialogue with modernist pioneers who explored geometric abstraction and material innovation within the jewelry medium, the work demonstrates significant technical accomplishment in its apparent fabrication methodology, the complex wireframe structure requires considerable skill to execute, whether through traditional metalsmithing techniques such as hand-forging and soldering individual elements, or through contemporary approaches including CAD modeling and precision casting or even additive manufacturing processes, each strut and junction point reveals careful attention to dimensional consistency, maintaining uniform wire gauge throughout while achieving clean angular intersections that preserve structural integrity and visual elegance, the integration of the central gemstone into the lattice architecture shows particular compositional intelligence, positioning the brilliant-cut stone at the focal node where multiple linear elements converge, this placement creates a natural visual hierarchy and draws the eye into the geometric maze, while the stone's prismatic fire provides chromatic vitality that enlivens the cooler metallic palette, the pendant's asymmetrical configuration demonstrates sophisticated understanding of dynamic balance, the irregular distribution of mass and void creates visual tension that energizes the composition and suggests organic growth patterns or crystallographic formation despite the precise geometric vocabulary, this balance between mathematical rigor and organic irregularity gives the piece conceptual depth, positioning it between rational order and natural chaos, the work appears to explore themes central to contemporary design discourse, including the relationship between digital design processes and physical materialization, the translation of screen-based geometric manipulations into tangible three-dimensional objects that occupy space and interact with light and the human body, in this sense the pendant becomes a meditation on contemporary design methodology itself, a demonstration of how computational thinking and traditional craft skills can synthesize into objects of beauty and conceptual significance, the choice of materials reinforces these themes, precious or semi-precious white metal suggests enduring value and permanence while also referencing industrial materials and engineering applications, positioning the work between fine art jewelry and functional design object, the presentation strategy visible in this photograph emphasizes the pendant's sculptural autonomy while acknowledging its fundamental function as bodily ornament, the soft-focus treatment of the human form transforms the wearer into abstract support structure, yet the visible warmth of skin tone and the natural curvature of neck and clavicle remind viewers that jewelry achieves its full meaning only through human context, adorning the body and moving through space, catching light and attention, serving as extension of personal identity and aesthetic values, Signal Pendant Jewelry invites viewers to consider how we negotiate between the rational and the organic, the digital and the handmade, the architectural and the intimate, and how objects of adornment can carry conceptual weight while still fulfilling their ancient function of enhancing human beauty and expressing individual taste, what meanings emerge when geometric precision embraces the body, and how does this particular convergence of form and material speak to contemporary experiences of living amid increasing technological mediation while seeking authentic connection to craft traditions and physical presence.

- Unique Properties
- From a fashion perspective, wearing jewelry enhances one’s overall look with striking details. The creative team envisions a piece that moves gracefully with the wearer, bringing it to life through motion. The piece Signal is designed with a neuron-inspired support structure forming its main framework. Joint clasps are integrated into the upper and lower sections, while strategic weight distribution allows the piece to sway, creating a dynamic and original jewelry design.

- Production Technology
- The creation of Signal follows a meticulous process, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Beginning with hand-sketched concepts and handcrafted wax models, the design is refined through precise 3D printing. Using recycled 925 sterling silver, the piece is vacuum cast, then hand-polished to achieve a mirror-like shine. Its dynamic structure allows natural movement, transforming it from a mere accessory into a symbol of connection and the future. Through innovation and sustainability, Signal embodies both elegance and meaning.
- Design Challenge
- The design concept originates from the idea that the piece moves up and down with the wearer’s movements, distinguishing Signal from other jewelry. However, this innovation brought challenges—ensuring the piece moves naturally in sync with the body's rhythm was a key obstacle. Through research and experimentation, the creative team refined the weight distribution of the main structure, successfully achieving a smooth and elegant motion.
- Project Duration
- The project began in January 2018 and was completed in October 2018 after months of effort. It was officially showcased at the Taiwan Craft Competition Exhibition in November 2018.
- Operation Flow
- Signal is a unique, original jewelry piece, symbolizing connections in life’s journey. It is easy to use—just align the main structure like a puzzle, press the clasp to secure it, and let the upper and lower sections sway freely.
Next, attach the silver chain and adjust both sides to the desired length for a perfect fit. Depending on the chain length and styling, the piece transforms into different looks, allowing the wearer to express their individuality. - Research
- The creative team reimagined jewelry design, drawing inspiration from daily life and sustainability. Signal symbolizes life’s connections, with a 3D network structure representing energy and thought. The design process combined hand-carved wax models, digital modeling, and 3D printing. Made from recyclable 925 sterling silver, Signal is crafted through 3D printing, lost-wax casting, and hand-polishing. Its dynamic structure moves with the wearer, embodying connection and change.
- Inspiration
- The creative team sought to break away from conventional jewelry designs. Inspired by life’s journey, they saw signals as connections linking moments, much like evolving human relationships. This idea shaped the essence of the piece Signal. The design combines signals and neurons—signals form the structure, while neurons create connections that bring it to life. This fusion symbolizes the continuous and ever-evolving rhythm of life.
