About Solaris Multi Layered Wall Decor

Solaris is a multi-layered wall decoration made for living spaces. The design is inspired by the fictional planet described in Stanislaw Lem's novel and by the idea of a reply to the human search for life in the universe. Each layer is drawn digitally, laser cut from beech veneered MDF, painted separately and then bonded into a deep wooden relief. Sunset tones ranging from orange to navy blue follow the rhythmic sequence of the layers. Lathe-turned iroko spheres and two 45 RPM vinyl records complete the composition.

Solaris Multi Layered Wall Decor emerges from contemporary explorations in dimensional surface decoration, where traditional craft vocabularies such as paper quilling, layered relief, and organic ornamentation meet precision digital fabrication and contemporary chromatic boldness, resulting in works that honor handcraft heritage while embracing technological possibility and unapologetic color celebration. The compositional achievement here resides in the skillful orchestration of multiple spatial and visual systems operating simultaneously: the diagonal rising movement that gives the piece directional energy and upward aspiration, the radial emanation from multiple centers that suggests organic growth patterns observed in botanical specimens or cellular structures under magnification, and the carefully calibrated depth layering that transforms flat sheet material into genuinely three-dimensional spatial experience through strategic overlap, cantilever, and shadow-casting relief. Chromatic sophistication emerges through the disciplined limitation to a focused palette of saturated magenta, deep violet, warm orange, and rich plum, each hue maintaining full intensity while the consistent warm orange edging functions as both unifying element and energizing accent, creating visual coherence across formal diversity. The linear striping that decorates each component introduces rhythmic regularity and surface animation, transforming solid color fields into vibrated optical textures that reward close examination while contributing to overall visual richness from viewing distance. Passages of particular accomplishment include the nested concentric circles that suggest protective enclosure or blossoming revelation, the elongated tendriled extensions that activate negative space and establish dynamic reach beyond the core mass, and the spherical elements whose glossy surfaces and warm highlights provide material contrast and introduce luminous focal points throughout the composition. Thematically, the work seems to celebrate principles of organic growth, proliferation, vital energy, and joyful abundance, inviting contemplation of how natural systems generate complex beauty through repetitive application of simple formal rules, how color can communicate emotional warmth and optimistic energy, and how dimensionality and shadow transform our experience of surface decoration into spatial encounter. The title Solaris suggests solar associations, perhaps evoking radiant energy, life-giving warmth, celestial phenomena, or the daily cycle of light that sustains terrestrial vitality, connections reinforced by the warm orange accents that might reference solar fire and the radiating compositional structure that echoes emanation from luminous sources. One might observe how the work balances apparent spontaneity with evident precision, organic vocabulary with geometric discipline, exuberant color with refined restraint, inviting viewers to consider how contemporary decorative arts navigate between traditional craft values and modern aesthetic sensibilities, between handmade intimacy and technological capability, between functional embellishment and autonomous aesthetic statement.

Production Technology
Our designs are first meticulously created in Adobe Illustrator, with each layer carefully drawn over several days. These layers are then laser-cut from veneered mdf panels. Each piece is individually painted using specialized paints, and once the paint has dried, all layers are assembled using adhesive, resulting in a refined and intricate final piece.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge I faced during the production of the design was converting the initial image of the design in my mind into a drawing accurately and sufficiently. Similarly, choosing the right combination of paints was another difficult aspect for me.
Project Duration
I started the creation of this design in July 2024 and completed it in October 2024.
Operation Flow
Our design has a visually striking complexity, thanks to layers that follow each other in rhythm. It stands out as an eye-catching piece in any living space.
Research
The only research method I use is observation. The purpose of my observation is to experience life with a deeper understanding and to take my relationship with life to a different level by stepping out of my comfort zone. For my research, I travel extensively and methodically read and watch cult films and books. The main goal of my research is to see what art and people can offer in my journey to understand life more profoundly. As a result, I strive to create a design that fully reflects the emotion I have experienced.
Inspiration
*Solaris* is inspired by the idea of the Voyager spacecraft, launched by Nasa in 1977 with records carrying human recordings in hopes of reaching extraterrestrial life, reaching the fictional planet Solaris from Stanisław Lem's novel, adapted into film by Andrei Tarkovsky, and receiving a response from Solaris to Earth, reminiscent of an iconic sunset. The design is created in a rhythmic sequence to symbolize Solaris' structure, which controls human minds.
