About Starry Town of Fuxian Lake Public Space
Starry Town of Fuxian Lake is a visitor center and public space built on the bank of Fuxian Lake. The building is shaped like a white leaf resting quietly beside the water. Each leaf roof covers about 1200 square meters and provides the shading required by the local climate. Two flowing white walls of aluminum plates connect the spaces, together with a curved ribbon bridge that extends 145 meters. The canopy over the entrance is formed from triangular mirror-finished stainless steel panels. Wide glazing on the ground floor keeps the lake visible from the site.
Within the evolving discourse of contemporary public architecture, MadeMake Architects's Starry Town of Fuxian Lake Public Space emerges as a compelling meditation on the dialogue between landscape and constructed form, demonstrating how twenty-first century design practice can achieve monumental presence while maintaining intimate human scale and environmental sensitivity, the project's signature canopy element suggesting affinities with organic architectural traditions spanning from the shell structures of mid-twentieth century engineers to the biomimetic explorations of recent parametric practice, yet achieving a distinctive character through its particular synthesis of tensile membrane technology and landscape integration, the formal vocabulary appears to draw inspiration from natural phenomena, perhaps the unfurling of a leaf, the crest of a wave, or the protective embrace of a sheltering wing, translating these organic references into precise structural expression that rewards both distant appreciation and close examination of its rhythmic rib articulation, the chromatic strategy demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how artificial and natural light sources interact during transitional hours, the warm amber glow emanating from the canopy interior creating welcoming beacon quality against the cool atmospheric conditions while the carefully preserved deciduous trees establish temporal awareness through their seasonal transformation, the landscape design exhibits particular accomplishment in its layered approach, with geometric stone platforms providing crisp foreground anchoring, textural plantings contributing warmth and movement, and the transparent glazed structures below the canopy allowing visual connection between covered and open spaces, this project invites consideration of how public architecture might serve both civic identity and daily human experience, offering spaces for gathering, contemplation, and the simple pleasure of witnessing light transform built form

- Unique Properties
- This case is the first cultural tourism project of Longfor Properties, and the visitor center is the sales office most closely combined with nature. In addition to the display function of the sales building, it is also the best platform to view the lake. The roof has a strong landscape function, which not only has a sense of sculpture, but meets the sun shading requirements of the local climate. It is like a white leaf, floating quietly on the bank of Fuxian Lake.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The length of the entire project is 245 meters, from the visitor center to the end of the ribbon structure. Including a 1673 square meters visitor center, a 200 square meters Zen book cafe and a jade ribbon bridge extending 145 meters. Every leaf roofing is approximately 1200 square meters. One single aluminum wall plate is 3 meters by 1.5 meters.

- Production Technology
- The dominant canopy hanging over the entrance is divided into a series of triangular mirror-finished stainless steel panels. These triangle units are arranged slightly offset each other at an angle to create this huge curvature extending forwards. Two significant flowing white walls are stretching from one end to almost the other. They are made of metallic aluminum plates. After more than adequate 3D experiments, these walls are fully evaluated then hollowed out on specific spots.
- Design Challenge
- Due to its complexity of 3D modeling and the final construction. The pressure also comes from the local authority that the architects must keep the pollution at the minimum. Throughout the collaboration with structural engineers, mechanical engineers and material suppliers, the designer insists that the units dimensions should be adjust one by one when it comes to the edge or the curve. In order to achieve the perfection of interior and exterior.
- Project Duration
- The project started in March 2018 in Yuxi and finished in October 2019 in Yuxi.
- Operation Flow
- In terms of the leaf roofing, the architects have pre-casted the steel sections and then fabricated PTFE fiberglass layers. However, the installing progress of the fiberglass drew another round of experiments on the relationship of connection nodes and plates which they adopted with turnover framework techniques.
- Research
- Interacting with landscape and interior designers from initial ideas stage, the architects studied several combinations of horizontal and vertical flow lines that enrich the content. Next, taking account of the suggestions from construction consultants, they zoom in the rhino models, deepen the study of the relationship with the exterior and interior. Especially the aluminum plates and the leaf roofing.
- Inspiration
- Fuxian Lake is a famous and precious conservatory water of my country. When the designer went on his first field trip to the site, he was astonished by its quietness and deepness. Therefore, he use the form of leaf on the site, and keep the arrangement as in-deliberate as possible. Using a soft curve connection that he called Jade ribbon to link adjoin spaces. Besides, huge amount of glazing is put on the ground floor to maintain a see through effect from any angle on the site to lake.
