About Tangled Paths Recycled Artistic Installation
Tangled Paths is a large art installation made from recycled materials. The work measures three meters in width, depth and height. Cardboard sheets and egg cartons form twisting frames that are joined with glue and supported by steel rods, nuts and washers. Acrylic paint gives the interwoven structures their color. Placed in an office lobby, the sculpture can be viewed from every angle, and visitors may pass through the piece. Tangled Paths reflects the movement of city life and promotes the use of recycled materials.
Nargiza Usmanova's Tangled Paths Recycled Artistic Installation engages the enduring artistic investigation of geometric form, chromatic interaction, and spatial transformation through a sculptural vocabulary that honors both minimalist discipline and exuberant color celebration, positioning itself within artistic lineages extending from Constructivist spatial exploration through Color Field optical investigations to contemporary environmental art practices emphasizing material reclamation and sustainable creative methodologies. The work demonstrates considerable compositional sophistication through its orchestration of seven rectangular frames into a complex three-dimensional matrix wherein each element maintains its discrete identity while participating in reciprocal structural relationships that generate a cohesive whole greater than its component parts, the chromatic achievement merits particular attention as the artist deploys a bold palette of saturated hues including deep violet, vivid magenta, bright cyan, acid yellow-green, golden yellow, and cobalt blue in a carefully calibrated harmony that exploits both analogous relationships and strategic complementary accents to create optical vibrancy and spatial advance-recede effects that amplify the physical three-dimensionality of the form. The technical execution reveals material intelligence in the transformation of recycled components into refined geometric elements that maintain visible evidence of their construction while achieving a polished aesthetic finish, the glossy painted surfaces and crisp edges demonstrating craft discipline that elevates humble materials through formal attention, the engineering of the interlocking frame structure suggests sophisticated spatial planning wherein each element's angle, depth of penetration, and rotational orientation contributes to overall structural stability through reciprocal bracing while simultaneously generating visual complexity through the multiplication of sightlines and chromatic juxtapositions that shift dramatically as viewers circumnavigate the work. The installation demonstrates site-responsive awareness through its calibrated scale and positioning within the architectural context, neither overwhelming the space nor retreating into timidity, instead establishing presence as both destination and marker that articulates circulation flows while inviting pause and contemplation, the neutral palette of the surrounding interior environment amplifies the sculpture's chromatic intensity creating a gallery-like presentation context within a functional institutional setting. Thematically the work appears to explore ideas of interconnection, interdependence, and the generative potential of constraint, the interlocking frames might be understood as visual metaphor for complex systems wherein individual elements achieve structural integrity and expressive capacity through relationship rather than isolation, the choice of recycled materials adds conceptual dimension suggesting themes of transformation, sustainability, renewal, and the revelation of latent beauty within discarded or overlooked resources, the title Tangled Paths evokes journey, complexity, the intersection of multiple trajectories, and perhaps the productive confusion that arises when linear expectations encounter multi-directional reality. The work invites consideration of how geometric abstraction can carry affective and metaphoric weight beyond pure formalism, how color functions as both optical phenomenon and emotional language, and how sculptural form transforms architectural space into experiential environment, viewers might contemplate which pathways they trace through visual space, whether the tangled quality suggests challenge or richness, and how the work's joyful chromatic exuberance balances its rigorous geometric discipline to propose that complexity and clarity can coexist in productive tension.

Cardboard sheets - 80
Egg cartons - 250
Hot glue sticks - 800
Wood glue (L) - 5
Acrylic paint (L) - 6
Plus, 3 steel threaded rods, 16 steel nuts, 8 steel washers - Design Challenge
- The most challenging aspect of this project was developing a method to create large cardboard frames (measuring 3 meters by 3 meters) that could maintain their shape without breaking while supporting and intertwining with one another. The frames were constructed from lightweight, recycled materials such as cardboard, boxes, and egg cartons, and were joined together using glue.
- Project Duration
- The project started in October 2024, finished in January 2025 in Toronto, and was exhibited at the Design TO Festival from January to February 2025.
- Operation Flow
- The installation 'Tangled Paths' is a recycled sculptural, color-rich object designed to serve as the focal point in the business center's lobby. It's large scale draws attention, allowing people to view the piece from every angle and, if they wish, even pass through it.
- Research
- The research focused on ecological art, aiming to promote environmental awareness through recycled material installations. Objectives included exploring sustainability in design and raising ecological consciousness. Methods involved studying environmental data, analyzing artistic trends, and testing material durability. Tools included recycled materials and prototyping techniques. Participants were artists and environmental experts. Results revealed increased audience engagement with eco-conscious themes, showcasing design's potential to influence sustainability and inspire social responsibility.
- Inspiration
- 'Tangled Paths' encapsulates the chaotic beauty of life in a bustling metropolis like Toronto, where millions of individuals cross paths daily, intertwining their journeys in a dynamic web of human experience. Conceived and led by Nargiza, the installation’s creative vision takes shape through twisting and interwoven colour structures that symbolize the unseen yet profound connections between people – moments of collaboration, learning, and growth that define the city’s ever-evolving identity.
