About Teli Tiee Multifunctional Player

Teli Tiee is a story player designed for interaction between children and older adults. Three types of story element blocks are placed into a groove, and the device senses each combination and plays the matching story. A lever is moved to the right to change the story and to the left to record a new one. Recorded stories are processed by artificial intelligence and turned into illustrated stories that can be shared. The body is made of plastic and wood, and includes near field communication, Bluetooth and an electronic screen.

Zhou Leijing's Teli Tiee Multifunctional Player emerges from contemporary conversations surrounding early childhood educational technology, engaging thoughtfully with the complex challenge of designing interactive learning devices that honor developmental needs while integrating digital media in developmentally appropriate contexts. The work demonstrates sophisticated formal resolution in its integration of natural wood materiality—specifically what appears to be sustainably sourced blonde hardwood, possibly beech or ash—with refined polymer housing in soft white, creating a material dialogue that bridges traditional educational toy aesthetics rooted in Montessori and Waldorf pedagogical traditions with contemporary technological functionality. The compositional achievement lies particularly in the work's successful negotiation of multiple seemingly contradictory design imperatives: the device maintains sufficient technological sophistication to deliver contemporary educational content through its integrated screen interface while presenting an exterior form language of approachable warmth, tactile invitation, and non-threatening domestic integration. The horizontal emphasis of the wooden base provides gravitational stability and suggests landscape orientation that accommodates collaborative viewing by multiple children or parent-child dyads, while the asymmetrically positioned white housing rises with gentle organic curves that soften technological presence and invite touch exploration. The scattered constellation of wooden tokens—executed with admirable precision as perfect circles, rounded squares, and triangular forms, each embedding a cadmium orange resin disc bearing simplified iconic symbols—suggests a tangible programming interface that privileges physical manipulation and fine motor engagement over purely screen-based interaction paradigms, potentially addressing contemporary concerns regarding excessive passive screen exposure in early childhood. The chromatic restraint demonstrates sophisticated visual intelligence, limiting the palette to warm natural wood tones and a single consistent orange accent that unifies the interactive elements while maintaining visual calm and reducing cognitive overwhelm that might result from excessive chromatic stimulation. The orange hue itself appears carefully calibrated—sufficiently saturated to provide clear visual differentiation and attract young attention, yet modulated enough to avoid aggressive stimulation—while its warm temperature aligns with the overall material warmth of the wood rather than introducing jarring cool-spectrum disruption. The device's formal language suggests possible influences from contemporary Scandinavian product design traditions emphasizing natural materials, functional clarity, and democratic accessibility, while also resonating with Japanese design philosophies of essential simplicity and respect for material honesty. The integration of screen technology within this warmly analog formal envelope represents a thoughtful negotiation of the physical-digital boundary in children's lives, suggesting that digital content delivery need not require cold, exclusively synthetic material expression or aggressive technological styling. The work invites consideration of how educational technology might evolve to support rather than replace physical manipulation, social interaction, and sensory-rich developmental experiences, offering a vision of technological integration that respects childhood as a distinct developmental period deserving specialized environmental and object ecologies rather than simply miniaturized adult technology.

Unique Properties
Teli Tiee is a story-player designed for intergenerational interaction between children and the elderly.
Equipped with three types of story elements blocks, the elderly and kids can listen colorful stories by combining different blocks. Stories come from system presets and elderly-shared ones. The elderly can share their stories or co-create new stories with kids. Recorded stories, processed by AI, are uploaded to the database and turned into illustrated stories for sharing.

Production Technology
The main body of the product is made of plastic and wood to ensure the safety of children. The product contains NFC, electronic screen, bluetooth and other modules to ensure the realization of product functions.
Design Challenge
The primary creative and research challenge was to bridge the generational gap through a single product. Designing for two distinct user groups-the elderly with their need for self-expression and reminiscence, and children with their demand for engaging and educational play-required a delicate balance. Technologically, integrating AI for story processing and illustration generation while ensuring friendliness for non-tech-savvy users was a significant hurdle.
Project Duration
The project started in April 2023 in China and finished in August 2023 in China
Operation Flow
When using the story machine, press the on key to start the device. According to the guidance, put story elements blocks into the groove, and the system senses and plays the story of the combination. Users can pull the lever to the right to switch to the next story, and to the left to record and upload their stories.
Research
The methodology involved analyzing the needs of both groups through interviews and observations. Interviews were conducted with elderly people and children to understand their behaviors, preferences, and pain points in communication. Observation was also carried out in community settings where inter-generational interactions occurred. Research tools included questionnaires, voice recorders for interviews, and note-taking.
Inspiration
In modern society, with the increasing prevalence of inter-generational families, there is a growing need for effective communication channels between the elderly and children. Observing that the elderly often find solace in reminiscing about their past experiences, while children are naturally drawn to the vivid and imaginative world of picture-book stories, we were inspired to create Teli Tiee.We use emotional and inclusive design principles to complete the design and use AI to process the story content.
