About The Lory Duck Chandelier

The Lory Duck is designed as a suspension system assembled from modules made of brass and epoxy glass, each resembling a duck sliding effortlessly through cool waters. The modules also offer configurability; with a touch, each can be adjusted to face any direction and hang at any height. The basic shape of the lamp was born relatively quickly. However, it needed months of research and development with countless prototypes to create its perfect balance and the best look from all possible angles.

Calaras Serghei's The Lory Duck Chandelier emerges from a rich tradition of zoomorphic decorative arts that has captivated human imagination across millennia, transforming functional domestic objects into vehicles of symbolic meaning and aesthetic delight through the incorporation of animal forms that resonate with deep cultural associations of freedom, grace, and natural beauty. The work demonstrates exceptional command of metalworking traditions, with the brushed brass surfaces revealing the hand of skilled artisanship in every carefully modulated curve and precisely executed edge, the material selection itself speaking to longstanding associations between golden metals and solar radiance, warmth, and enduring value. Compositionally, the designer achieves remarkable dynamism through the asymmetrical arrangement of three bird forms at varying heights and orientations, creating visual movement and interest while maintaining coherent unity through the consistent material palette and the rhythmic repetition of the elongated silhouettes. The formal vocabulary balances opposing qualities with sophisticated assurance, juxtaposing the aggressive angularity of the pointed tails and beaks against the soft maternal roundness of the bodies cradling their glowing orbs, this tension between sharpness and gentleness suggesting the complex nature of avian life and perhaps metaphorically the dual qualities of protection and aspiration that birds have symbolized across world cultures. The integration of function and form achieves seamless synthesis as the frosted glass spheres that house the light sources become the anatomical bellies of the birds, their soft luminosity suggesting both the warmth of incubating eggs and the ethereal glow of creatures touched by celestial light. Technical accomplishment extends to the suspended installation format, with the thin black cords providing necessary structural support while visually disappearing against the neutral ground, allowing the brass forms to appear magically floating as if genuinely airborne. One might observe how the work participates in contemporary movements toward biophilic design, bringing references to natural forms into interior environments as a means of maintaining human connection to the organic world within constructed spaces. The viewer is invited to contemplate how these eternal birds, frozen in their graceful suspension, might speak to enduring human desires for lightness, freedom, and the transformation of practical necessity into poetic expression.

Design Challenge
The biggest creative challenge for Serghei was to create a piece that was both minimalistic and yet still rich in character. He strived to create a chandelier with clean & simple lines, with each module of the piece composed to resemble a stylized duck. Again and again Serghei returned to a single them; paring away all unnecessary detail to leave only the essential and pure elements of the design. The final challenge was cost; production of a custom glass bulb is quite expensive, but in the end the designer came upon a good solution by using epoxy glass as the material.
Project Duration
The project had started in May 2018 in Moldova,Chisinau and finished in September 2018 .
Operation Flow
During the design process, the designer Serghei Calarash developed a multitude of sketches and drawings, with special attention paid to the shape and technical characteristics of the modules, as well as the overall design and style of the chandelier. Special attention was drawn to shape and technical characteristics, as well as the design and style of the product. Those detailed drawings later proved to be essential in solving the many challenges in both the production and lighting of the piece, all of which culminated in the creation of the final concept for the Lory Ducks chandelier.
Research
The basic shape of the lamp was born relatively quickly . However,it needed months of research and development with countless prototypes to create its perfect balance and the best look from all possible angles .
Inspiration
The inspiration in the design of this chandelier arose from seeking to capture the fluidity and serenity of a duck floating in calm waters. For reference and inspiration, Serghei Calarash created several sketches from photos of birds in nature; the wings, torso, beak and other such shapes that resembles a duck.

Design Interview about The Lory Duck Chandelier

In the future, we plan to manufacture fixtures and furniture of the Siero Carandash brand. I just want to create a good design in my country, as well as expand it to the global market.

About a year

I intend to produce this work on my own

. The desire, desire to grow, and the general ideas of my family inspire me to achieve goals. My wife is my muse and best critic. And also the incredible work and the fruit of my efforts always makes me go forward. Inspiration can be subdued only when you have the strength to work, it doesn’t matter what time of day, year, or time in general. Diligence is my main motivator.

I am impressed by B&B Italia - Desk -, painting, lighting, decor,

I use 3ds Max and Fstorm rendering

I designed the Lory Duck on my own.

The biggest creative challenge for me was to create a piece that was both minimalistic and yet still rich in character. He strived to create a chandelier with clean & simple lines, with each module of the piece composed to resemble a stylized duck. Again and again Serghei returned to a single them; paring away all unnecessary detail to leave only the essential and pure elements of the design. The final challenge was the cost; production of a custom glass bulb is quite expensive, but in the end the designer came upon a good solution by using epoxy glass as the material.

. My path as a designer began long before I made an informed choice to become one.
I can even say that it was not me who chose the design, but the design chose me. As a child, I was always interested in creating something unusual and creative. My grandfather was engaged in the construction business, and instilled in me the love of creating something with his own hands, it fascinated me so much that I worked for days on end. As time passed, I grew up, and the desire to create something did not disappear anywhere, so from a dreamy child, grew up a no less dreamy designer.
Did I always want to be a designer? I would not say so, initially, I was engaged in painting and quite successfully. Lecturer Bakitsky from the College of Art, where I studied for 4 years in 2007, inspired me and revealed my potential. He became for me a mentor and father in art while studying. made me understand what I originally did not see in myself.
The desire, painstaking work and the desire to develop, that’s what made me always move forward. Lucky? I do not believe in miracles, I believe that I can `` get a star from heaven, '' if you just want to and set a goal.
After college, in front of me was the choice to pursue a career in painting, or to engage in design. I decided that with experience in painting I can become a good designer.
