About Time Book Bookend

Time Book is a bookend designed for use on a desk or a bookshelf. Each bookend is made from a hand-polished crystal glass block. Special ink is screen printed on the surface and cured at high temperature. The high density of the crystal glass gives the bookend stability in use. The design is minimal in function, form and material, and resembles a book-shaped sculpture. The form presents the function clearly. The printed text uses the Quinsay Parto typeface. The letters MMXIX on the spine are the Roman numerals for 2019.

Tong Yi's Time Book Bookend presents a compelling meditation on the intersection of literary culture and material innovation, transforming the utilitarian function of the bookend into an object of contemplative beauty. The work emerges from a rich tradition of designers who have sought to elevate everyday domestic objects through careful attention to material properties and symbolic resonance. Executed in transparent blue acrylic, the piece achieves a remarkable optical complexity wherein the familiar silhouette of an open book becomes a vessel for light itself, the material gathering illumination and redistributing it through subtle internal refractions. The integration of typographic content—rendered as precisely etched text visible through the translucent surface—creates a layered visual experience that rewards extended viewing. One encounters first the sculptural presence, then the textual content, and finally the interplay between these elements as light conditions shift. The chromatic choice carries particular significance within design traditions that associate blue with knowledge, depth, and contemplation, qualities appropriate to an object intended to support and protect literary collections. Technical accomplishment is evident in the precision of the casting or machining process, which maintains absolute clarity within the material while achieving crisp textual definition. The work suggests affinities with the crystalline explorations of Scandinavian glass traditions while participating in contemporary conversations about the book as cultural artifact in an increasingly digital age. Viewers might consider how this functional object transforms the act of shelving books into a celebration of literary culture itself.
