About Toma Living Sofa

Toma is a sofa designed for living spaces. The form of Toma comes from the idea of wrapping a single piece of fabric around the whole seat, in the manner of crepe cloth. The result is a continuous surface with soft undulations that envelops the person seated. Stretch fabric was used to achieve the complex curved surface, which was difficult to produce. Toma measures 1580 mm in width, 950 mm in depth and 850 mm in height. The design explores a freer form for a common piece of furniture.

Drawing upon traditions of sculptural furniture design that emerged through the twentieth century's exploration of organic modernism, Yuto Yamada's Toma Living Sofa represents a thoughtful synthesis of ergonomic consideration and aesthetic innovation. The work appears to engage with the legacy of designers who challenged rectilinear conventions, seeking instead forms that respond to the natural curves of the human body at rest. The channel-tufted surface treatment serves dual purposes: creating visual rhythm through regular vertical articulation while simultaneously offering tactile comfort through the soft valleys formed between padded ribs. This technical approach demonstrates considerable skill in upholstery construction, as maintaining parallel channel alignment across the complex three-dimensional surface, particularly where the backrest transitions into the distinctive scroll-form armrest, presents significant fabrication challenges. The monochromatic gray palette situates the piece within contemporary interior design sensibilities that favor neutral foundations, while the sculptural silhouette ensures the sofa functions as a focal point rather than mere background element. One might observe how the curving scroll terminus creates an intimate enclosure, suggesting a cocoon-like embrace that invites repose and contemplation. The continuous flow from back through seat to armrest eliminates the visual interruption of separate components, achieving an organic unity that resonates with natural forms found in shells, waves, and geological formations. The design appears to meditate upon the relationship between furniture as functional object and furniture as sculptural presence, proposing that these categories need not remain distinct. Viewers may wish to consider how the rhythmic channel pattern creates visual movement while the overall form suggests stillness and sanctuary.

Unique Properties
This sofa was born from the act of wrapping it in a single piece.
It has become a unique sofaa with undulations. This project began with the question: could we express the commonplace piece of furniture that is the sofa in a freer form? The idea expanded from the thought that wrapping it in a single piece of fabric, like crepe, might yield an interesting shape, leading us to arrive at this form.

Production Technology
Creating the shape of the tertiary surface proved extremely challenging. It was achieved by employing stretch fabric.
Design Challenge
Expressing the form of the cubic surface and realising it while utilising the engineers' skills proved extremely challenging. Through repeated discussions, we continued to seek the correct solution until completion was achieved.
Project Duration
The project started in Apr. 2020 in Tokyo and finished in Jan. 2021 in Tokyo, and was exhibited in Salone del Mobile in June 2022.
Operation Flow
This unique sofa, which adorns the space, envelops those who sit upon it. It promises an experience unlike any other.
