About Tondo Sofa

Tondo is a sofa designed as a sculptural seating piece for interior spaces. The form is inspired by the sphere, a basic geometric shape associated with perfection and infinity. Spheres shape the backrest, while the rounded seat wraps around the body and supports relaxed postures. The sofa measures 3600 mm wide, 2000 mm deep and 870 mm high. Construction uses reforestation wood, natural latex and a seamless fabric cover with recycled elastane. The flexible lining allows the surface to adapt to the body, joining comfort with a distinct visual presence.

Situated within the evolving discourse of contemporary furniture design that privileges sculptural expression and biomorphic formal vocabularies, Anna Maya's Tondo Sofa emerges as a compelling synthesis of organic fluidity and functional purpose, demonstrating sophisticated engagement with modernist traditions that trace lineage from Scandinavian organic design through mid-century American sculptural furniture to present-day investigations of form, materiality, and spatial presence. The compositional achievement evident in this work manifests through the elegant elongation of the primary seating volume, which establishes a horizontal emphasis that grounds the piece spatially while the undulating profile introduces dynamic visual interest through continuously varying curvature, creating a form that appears simultaneously relaxed and energized, the rhythmic punctuation provided by three graduated spherical elements introducing geometric counterpoint that enlivens the composition through repetition with subtle variation, each sphere slightly different in scale creating progressive rhythm that guides the eye through the left portion of the arrangement. The chromatic sophistication of the design demonstrates remarkable restraint, deploying a refined palette dominated by warm white upholstery that reads as inviting and approachable yet maintains visual sophistication through its careful neutrality, set against the dramatic foil of charcoal and black environmental surfaces that create atmospheric depth while the introduction of warm metallic bronze or brass tones in the architectural backdrop provides subtle chromatic accent, establishing a triadic relationship of warm neutral, cool neutral, and metallic warmth that achieves visual harmony through balanced restraint rather than chromatic exuberance. Technical facility becomes apparent in the seamless integration of structural support within the voluminous upholstered form, the consistent sectional profile suggesting careful engineering that maintains formal purity while accommodating functional requirements, and the precisely executed spherical elements demonstrating geometric precision in their three-dimensional realization. The material choices seem particularly considered, with the textured upholstery suggesting tactile appeal and domestic warmth while the exposed base element visible beneath the sofa's curve appears rendered in natural wood tones, introducing organic material presence that humanizes the sculptural form and connects the design to craft traditions. Thematically, the work appears to explore tensions and harmonies between geometric and organic formal languages, between sculptural aspiration and functional necessity, between monumental presence and intimate domestic scale, inviting consideration of how contemporary furniture design negotiates these productive polarities, the biomorphic curves potentially evoking natural forms such as smooth river stones, windswept dunes, or the flowing lines found in certain biological structures, while the spherical elements introduce Platonic geometric purity, their perfect circular profiles suggesting timeless mathematical ideal. The architectural context documented in this presentation proves significant, as the industrial concrete flooring and matte black surfaces establish a gallery-like neutrality that allows the furniture to assert its sculptural character, while the patterned relief wall with its repeating circular apertures creates visual dialogue with the spherical cushion elements, suggesting intentional environmental choreography that extends the design vocabulary beyond the furniture object itself into spatial composition. One might observe potential references to the organic modernism of designers who sought to reconcile industrial production with humanistic formal values, the continuous flowing line perhaps evoking traditions from Alvar Aalto's bent plywood explorations to Isamu Noguchi's biomorphic sculptures to Zaha Hadid's fluid architectural forms, while the restrained material palette and emphasis on pure form suggest affinities with minimalist design philosophy that privileges essential gesture over decorative elaboration. How does this work invite viewers to reconsider the boundaries between furniture as functional object and furniture as sculptural intervention within domestic or commercial space, and what possibilities emerge when seating design prioritizes formal exploration and material expression alongside ergonomic and programmatic requirements?

Unique Properties
The Tondo Sofa is designed to break the conventions of traditional design, uniting form and function in a sculptural piece, meeting a growing demand for furniture that causes significant aesthetic impact. This approach values design as a form of artistic expression, making the Tondo a timeless piece that adapts to different styles of decoration. The Tondo presents rounded spheres and shapes in contexts until now little explored in furniture design.
Dimensions & Packaging
The Round Sofa has the following dimensions: 3,600 mm wide, 2,000 mm deep and 870 mm high. It was developed with a focus on sustainability, using reforestation wood, natural and renewable latex, and fabric coating with recycled elastane.

Design Challenge
The creative challenge was to transform the artistic concept of the round into a functional sofa, balancing form and ergonomics. Obstacles included adapting the spheres as backrest without compromising comfort and industrial production without losing the fluidity of design. Historical and social research allowed for aesthetics, and sustainable materials, manufacturing technology and structural viability were challenges overcome to ensure innovation and product quality.
Project Duration
The project began in July two thousand twenty four in Florianópolis and ended in September two thousand twenty four. It was exhibited at the Casa Cor Florianopolis exhibition in Brazil.
Operation Flow
The Tondo Sofa operates intuitively: its organic design invites to use, allowing the user to naturally settle in different positions. Its rounded shape wraps around the body, promoting relaxation. The absence of seams and flexible lining provide ergonomic adaptation. Its performance comes from the fusion of aesthetics and comfort, offering optimal support and a unique visual impact, making it a functional and sculptural piece at the same time.
Research
The design research of the Tondo Sofa was exploratory, based on the observation of nature and the influence of the Renaissance rood. The goal was to create a piece of furniture that combines art and functionality in an innovative way. The methodology combined ergonomic studies, materials testing and digital modeling. Data were collected by prototyping and comfort analysis with users. The result was a fluid and timeless design, impacting the market with its unique and versatile aesthetics.
Inspiration
The Tondo sofa was inspired by the basic geometric shapes present in the universe, with a focus on the sphere, an element that represents perfection, infinity and eternity.
