About Twiny Multifunctional Sofa
Twiny is a multifunctional sofa designed for children in homes, preschools and daycare centers. The sofa looks like a playful seat and conceals an adjustable table with storage. Separating the two sofa units reveals the hidden table. Turning the top part of the table changes its height and opens the storage compartment. The modular pieces can be arranged in different layouts for playing, studying and relaxing. The upholstery is made from recycled polyester. The table is made from reclaimed wood chips and recycled plastic.

The design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of biomorphic form language, drawing upon mid-twentieth century traditions of organic modernism while addressing distinctly contemporary concerns of adaptability and child-centered design thinking. The continuous curved shell construction, rising from broad seating bases into protective high backs, creates an architectural vocabulary of embrace and shelter that transforms mere seating into spatial definition, offering psychological comfort alongside physical support. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of multiple functions within unified formal expression, the central unit combining lounge seating with an adjustable work surface whose spiral support column introduces dynamic vertical interest while maintaining the overall organic coherence of the ensemble. The chromatic strategy employs warm ochre-gold as dominant tone, creating domestic warmth while the subtle tonal variation between exterior and interior surfaces adds visual richness that rewards close observation. Material choices appear to balance tactile pleasure with practical durability, the woven textile surfaces suggesting softness while leather accent handles contribute notes of crafted refinement. - The Project started in Cologne in May 2024 and was completed in Cologne in August 2024.

- Twiny multifunctional furniture is designed for easy interaction and transformation, making it perfect for children. To reveal the hidden table, simply separate the two sofa units. By turning the top part of the table, children can adjust its height and access the storage compartment. The modular pieces can be reconfigured into different layouts to suit various activities, fostering creativity and independence.

- The research aimed to develop multifunctional, space-saving children's furniture that promotes versatility, safety, and sustainability. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through interviews and home observations. The findings underscored the need for adaptable, safe, and easy to maintain furniture with integrated storage. Insights emphasized the value of multifunctional furniture in fostering creativity and independence. This research culminated in the creation of Twiny furniture, a versatile, modular design that maintains organized and clutter-free spaces.
- Inspiration
- Twiny multifunctional sofa was inspired by the increasing need for adaptable furniture in small living spaces, particularly for families with children. Observing how limited space can restrict children's ability to explore and engage in creative play, I aimed to design a piece that not only maximizes space but also encourages independence and imagination. My motivation stemmed from the desire to create a functional, safe, and easy to maintain solution that meets the needs of modern families.
