About V Stool Self Assembled Seat

V Stool is a self assembly seat made of beech or integrated bamboo with acrylic parts. The design uses a new tenon and mortise structure that relies on the natural elasticity of the wood, combined with a dovetail lock. No separate connecting parts are needed, so the seat can be taken apart and put together by hand in three or four steps. V Stool measures 360 by 360 by 450 millimetres. The flat package lowers transport costs and suits online sale. The simple form is intended for young users with small homes who move often.

Positioned at the intersection of Scandinavian craft heritage and contemporary material innovation, Xu Le's V Stool Self Assembled Seat represents a thoughtful meditation on user participation, material transparency, and the democratization of well-designed furniture. The work emerges from a rich tradition of flat-pack and self-assembled furniture that stretches from early twentieth-century modernist experiments through to present-day concerns with shipping efficiency, reduced carbon footprints, and consumer engagement with the making process. The designer appears to have interrogated the fundamental assumptions of furniture joinery, arriving at an elegant solution wherein precision-machined slots in solid timber legs receive acrylic components through interlocking geometries that require no tools, adhesives, or mechanical fasteners. This assembly methodology transforms the end user from passive consumer to active participant in the furniture's completion, echoing philosophical frameworks articulated by designers who believed that engagement with making processes enhances appreciation and attachment to objects. The material selection demonstrates sophisticated understanding of contrast and complement: the warmth and organic variation of natural timber, with its unique grain patterns ensuring each piece maintains individual character, plays against the crystalline perfection and optical neutrality of industrial acrylic. This dialogue between the handcrafted and the manufactured, the natural and the synthetic, the opaque and the transparent, generates visual and conceptual richness that rewards sustained contemplation. The proportional system appears carefully calibrated, with the leg splay angle providing stability while maintaining visual lightness, and the stretcher placement optimizing structural performance without interrupting the floating quality of the seat plane. Viewers might consider how the visibility of the joinery system—the slots, the intersections, the load-bearing connections—transforms structure into ornament, making the mechanics of stability an aesthetic feature rather than a hidden necessity.

Design Challenge
The most challenging part is its structural design. According to the toughness of the wood or bamboo material itself, a new tenon-and-mortise structure is innovatively designed to realize the disassembly and assembly function and firmness of the V-Stool. The presentation of its structural shape perfectly blends with contemporary aesthetics!
Project Duration
The project started in September 2019in Hangzhou and finished in May 2020 in Hangzhou.
Operation Flow
Open the product package, assemble the product in 3-4 steps, the operation is very convenient, you can experience the fun of assembly, and the assembled product is very strong and durable.
