About Waima Year of The Horse Beer Packaging

Waima Year of The Horse is a limited edition beer packaging created for the Chinese New Year of the Horse. The glass bottle departs from the usual cylindrical beer form and takes an elegant shape, with a rounded middle section that tapers toward the neck and the base. Flying horses with spread wings are shown rising upward, linked by flowing red ribbons that express good wishes for the coming year. A 360 degree baked enamel finish covers the curved surface and gives the motifs a layered three dimensional texture and a rich luster.

MEITUAN's Waima Year of The Horse Beer Packaging exemplifies contemporary approaches to commemorative beverage container design where structural form and applied ornamentation merge into unified aesthetic achievement that transcends conventional labeling systems to create dimensionally ambitious presentation suggesting collectible status and ceremonial purpose. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of cylindrical substrate as armature for sculptural narrative, where three prominent equine figures rendered in white relief material spiral upward around the deep brown glass vessel in poses suggesting energetic forward gallop, their anatomical modeling conveying muscular power and graceful athleticism through carefully observed leg extension, mane flow, and postural dynamics. Complementing these figural elements are flowing ribbon forms that transition through warm gradients from intense vermillion through coral to soft peach, weaving serpentine paths between and behind the horses to create visual continuity and rhythmic progression around the bottle's circumference. The compositional achievement rests in the successful negotiation between the static cylindrical form and the dynamic rotational energy of the applied elements, which invite viewer circumnavigation and reward examination from multiple vantage points as different horses assume prominence and the ribbon paths reveal varying spatial relationships. Technical execution demonstrates considerable skill in dimensional element application to curved glass substrate, requiring precise registration and structural stability while maintaining clean edges and preventing visual clutter despite the density of overlapping forms. The chromatic restraint to deep brown ground, pure white sculptural elements, and warm red-orange accent range creates sophisticated visual hierarchy and ensures legibility of the complex dimensional composition, while the material contrast between glossy reflective glass and matte relief elements enhances dimensional perception and surface interest. The horizontal red label band at shoulder height provides typographic information while serving compositional function as stabilizing horizontal element counterbalancing the dynamic diagonals of horses and ribbons below. Thematically the work appears to engage with cultural traditions surrounding zodiacal or calendar celebrations where the horse serves as emblematic creature, and the packaging design transforms routine beverage container into ceremonial object appropriate for gift-giving, festive gathering, or commemorative consumption. The horses themselves carry rich symbolic freight across numerous cultural traditions as embodiments of vitality, freedom, nobility, grace, and auspicious energy, while their dynamic poses suggest forward progress, celebratory spirit, and joyous momentum. The ribbon elements may reference festive decoration, gift-wrapping traditions, or celebratory streamers, reinforcing the ceremonial rather than everyday character of the container. One might observe how this design strategy elevates the act of beverage selection and presentation from mere commodity transaction to participation in meaningful cultural ritual, where the container itself becomes artifact worth preserving beyond its consumable contents, and the visual experience of the packaging enriches the broader social and ceremonial context of shared drinking traditions.

Production Technology
Both the flying horse and ribbon motifs are rendered using a 360 degree baked enamel finish, ensuring excellent adhesion and a rich luster. This creates a contrast with the transparent glass bottle, achieving visual tension between lightness and weight. The horse is meticulously crafted to form a 3D texture with distinct layers and lifelike details. This transforms the entire bottle into a work of art, further elevating the collectible value and ceremonial significance of the product.
Design Challenge
The challenge was achieving a 360 degree baked enamel finish. Unlike conventional labels or partial prints, the finish has to snugly fit the curved bottle surface. However, due to the varying curvature of the bottle, the baking process is highly prone to discontinuities and uneven thickness. The team has conducted repeated trials and optimized key parameters like temperature, coating thickness, and curing time, finally delivering precise detailing, consistent coloration, and smooth transitions.
Project Duration
The project started in Beijing in October 2025. The product will be launched in China in October 2026.
Operation Flow
Breaking away from the conventional cylindrical form of beer bottles, the packaging resembles an elegant wine bottle. It features a full, rounded middle section that tapers naturally toward the neck and base, enhancing the overall artistic aura through fluid curves.
The composition emphasizes purposeful ascent and ordered dynamism: each horse is captured in a pose of spreading wings and leaping upward, interwoven with red ribbons to create a coherent, dynamic visual narrative.
Research
As the 2026 Year of the Horse approaches, the brand, inspired by the cultural symbolism of the horse in Chinese tradition, launches the limited edition packaging. Centering on the flying horse leaping with wings spreading, the design embodies upward momentum and clear direction. Red ribbons weave through the composition like drifting clouds and flowing water, binding disparate elements into a seamless whole. Together, they paint a hopeful and harmonious vision for the dawn of the new year.
Inspiration
2026 marks the Chinese Year of the Horse, an animal that in traditional Chinese culture symbolizes self improvement and the courage to forge ahead. Inspired by that, the packaging centers on the flying horse spreading the wings and ascending into the sky. By capturing the moment of its leap, the packaging embodies the promise of a new beginning and the unfolding of momentum. Flowing ribbons represent heartfelt blessings and set a warm yet determined tone for the direction of the coming year.
