About Yebuna Coffee Packaging
Yebuna is a packaging design for a range of roasted coffee blends. The identity draws on Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, and on the Amharic word Yebuna. A logo framed by parentheses refers to the journey of coffee from origin to cup. Bold vertical typography improves visibility on the shelf, and vivid colors inspired by African rivers, mountains and sunsets distinguish each blend. The coffee is held in durable resealable bags that preserve freshness. Advanced printing reproduces precise gradients and rich tones.
Antonia Skaraki's Yebuna Coffee Packaging situates itself within the vibrant contemporary discourse of specialty coffee branding, where packaging design functions simultaneously as protective container, informational interface, brand ambassador, and cultural artifact signaling the elevation of coffee from commodity to craft beverage worthy of design attention traditionally reserved for wine, chocolate, or artisanal food products. The quartet of pouches demonstrates sophisticated engagement with color-coding systems that enable intuitive product differentiation within a cohesive brand architecture, a packaging strategy that balances the commercial imperative of shelf visibility and variant navigation with the aesthetic aspiration toward design excellence and visual refinement. The chromatic boldness of the saturated magenta, warm neutral, vibrant orange, and electric green substrates reflects contemporary confidence in color as primary communicative tool, moving decisively away from the kraft-paper rusticity or monochromatic severity that characterized earlier phases of specialty coffee packaging toward a more exuberant, optimistic, and democratically accessible visual language. The structural choice of flexible stand-up pouches with integrated resealable closures and degassing valves demonstrates technical fluency with contemporary coffee packaging requirements, addressing the practical realities of volatile aromatic compound preservation, consumer convenience, and retail display efficiency while maintaining the material elegance that signals premium positioning. The typographic system achieves notable success through its geometric boldness and vertical orientation, the substantial blue letterforms creating strong shelf presence and immediate brand recognition while maintaining sufficient refinement through consistent weight, careful spacing, and disciplined restraint that prevents the design from tipping into visual chaos despite the chromatic intensity of the background fields. The circular medallion device centered on each pouch face establishes a contemplative focal zone, its translucent white suggesting both purity and illumination while the subtle landscape imagery within evokes origin narratives and natural provenance without resorting to literal photographic representation or ethnographic exoticization, instead offering abstracted geographical reference that invites rather than dictates interpretation. The sinuous ribbon or river form bisecting each medallion introduces organic movement and lyrical grace into an otherwise rigorously geometric composition, this curved element potentially suggesting water as essential agricultural input, vapor as transformation during roasting, or simply visual relief from rectilinear severity. The designer appears to navigate successfully between competing demands of commercial packaging: achieving differentiation within crowded specialty coffee retail environments while maintaining brand coherence across variants, projecting premium quality and design consciousness while remaining approachable rather than intimidatingly exclusive, honoring coffee's agricultural and geographical origins while avoiding visual clichés of rusticity or exoticization, and balancing functional transparency regarding product variants with aesthetic refinement that elevates the quotidian ritual of coffee preparation into something worthy of design celebration. The material choice of metallized or pearlescent flexible film contributes subtle luxury cues through its reflective luminosity and tactile suggestion, the gentle specular highlights and color-shifting potential of such substrates adding depth and visual interest that matte papers cannot achieve. One might observe how this packaging system participates in broader cultural conversations about everyday luxury, the aestheticization of daily rituals, and the role of design in constructing meaning and value around agricultural products, inviting viewers to consider how color, form, typography, and material collaborate to transform functional containers into carriers of aspiration, identity, and sensory anticipation that begins before the package is ever opened.

- Production Technology
- The packaging is made from durable, resealable coffee bags designed to preserve freshness. Advanced printing techniques allow for precise gradients and rich, vibrant tones that echo African scenery. Digital design processes were used to refine typography and the symbolic logo, ensuring clarity and impact. The result is a balance of strong visual identity and practical functionality, optimized for consumer use.
- Design Challenge
- The primary challenge was expressing Ethiopia's coffee legacy in a contemporary and globally appealing way. Balancing cultural authenticity with modern aesthetics required sensitivity to avoid cliches. External constraints such as sustainable materials, print limitations, and production feasibility shaped key decisions. Overcoming these obstacles led to a design that celebrates tradition while presenting a bold, competitive brand identity for today’s market.
- Project Duration
- The project started in December 2023 in Athens and finished in April 2024 in Athens
- Operation Flow
- The design ensures ease of use through resealable, airtight structures that maintain product quality. Large vertical typography enhances visibility on shelves, while bold colors clearly differentiate each variety. Interaction is intuitive, helping consumers quickly identify blends. Beyond function, the design conveys narrative and emotion, inviting users to connect with coffee’s origins while enjoying a refined product experience.
- Research
- This project stems from cultural and visual research into Ethiopia's coffee heritage. Objectives included creating a brand that reflects authenticity and global relevance. The methodology combined ethnographic insights, language study, and visual testing of typography and color. Iterations ensured clarity and impact. Results confirmed that consumers resonate with its emotional and cultural depth, making it more than packaging, an identity rooted in heritage.
- Inspiration
- The project draws inspiration from Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, where culture and ritual are inseparable from daily life. The Amharic word Yebuna embodies authenticity, while the natural landscapes of rivers, mountains, and sunsets shaped the visual language.
