Interview with B a r b a r a Schneider

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am a freelance designer, illustrator, and multiple-disciplinary visual artist. My main interests are art & design, toys, children´s literature, fashion & textiles. I am always interested in new collaborations and art & design projects and to "join a dream team". B a r b a r a Schneider @artavita.com https://artrepreneur.com/p/BarbaraSchneider
What is "design" for you?
A short reply: "Design"- a quality product with a certain purpose and function, which improves our way of living - modern world - and state of art.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
Cooking gloves! Actually, there was a call for designs, published on the blackboard of the University. I realized my ideas and submitted my designs: a serial of "animals", http://bit.ly/2f13oaP. A few weeks later, I received a message from the company that I was the only participant and that they cannot give me a prize, but they DO like the designs and they would like to buy the animal collection: My first sale was made. Unfortunately, no production, but licensing and production are still possible. In 1988, I made some illustrations for Golfino Moden as a freelancer (briefing) and created some illustrations for their knitwear design collection.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
... paper, textiles, wood, new and alternatives materials, and other materials, photography, passion for printing, ........
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Happiness! A suitable quotation is: "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Confucius
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
More happiness and of course more pleasure to continue designing.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Summarized: Enriching our way of living and state of art with "wonderful objects and concepts", cultivating and spreading humanity/ human rights ( i.e.: healthy and no harmful products, no child labor), and saving our planet as much as possible.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Some catchwords: new technologies and in contrast more cultivation or integration of traditional things/products and materials and the environment: new ideas to save our planet and enrich our lives, more up-cycling than recycling, objects with multiple functions, more comfort, simplicity/ minimalism, entertainment, communication and education, smaller and lighter objects ...
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Subjects: Discussion of our modern life, daily life, literature, history of art and design, humanity, and recycling-upcycling. Source of inspiration: imagination, own experiences, own art/design/photographs, studies, "lack of satisfaction"/ desire, traveling & research, music, and more
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
In general, the cultural heritage of Germany is interesting, thinking of art, craft, design, and architecture. It was a pleasure to discuss the Bavarian culture to create "My Travel Guide Munich" and it would be also a joyful challenge to discuss further “cultures & cities”. Nevertheless, I preferred/prefer to work & live "abroad". Freedom of Art is very important.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Some suggestions are: "forcing" own creativity daily, discussion of the history of art and/ or design, cultivating kind of sketchbooks, questioning the state of living, etc.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
It is a great pleasure and a wonderful passion and challenge. Opportunity to work internationally and worldwide.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Necessity: freedom of art and design, imagination, passion, confidence, curiosity, research, purpose, good concept, functionality, humanity, eco-friendly as much as possible.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Imagination, good sketching/drawing skills, 3D visual thinking abilities, knowledge of / interest in materials and technologies, good communication skills (presenting design, collaboration with a team or certain specialists).
