About Mula Preta Design

Mula Preta Design Studio was created in 2012 by designer Andre Gurgel and architect Felipe Bezerra and designer Andre Gurgel , both from Natal-Brazil, when they decided to be partners as they had a lot in common regarding creative ideas. The name was inspired in a song of one of the icons of Northeast Brazil, Luiz Gonzaga, since the main concept is to represent that region. With that in mind, they putted this culture in evidence internationally, participating in exhibitions in Paris and Milan, where they rewarded several awards.

Interview with Mula Preta Design

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I started my college in Electrical engineer, however in the middle when I was discovering the CAD design, I saw a big possibility in the 3d field, and then 5 years ago, when I was 19 years old, I started an architectural visualization company. In this process the furniture design, the lighting design and product design was the support to create amazing tridimensional perspectives. I always had the desire to design products and with this possibilites and my tridimensional design background, I could make this happen.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My company works with three dimensional architectural render. The product design I take in parallel. However they are intimately connected.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
The Panton Chair, sounds cliche but I really appreciate the way that Verner Panton designed the incredible cantilever chair, with an classy organic form. As him said "Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using color. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." It's an universal design, that breaks a paradigm and defines an era.
What makes a design successful?
There is a lot of important things that makes a design successful, but I can synthesize saying that a good design is innovative, and the technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. A good design makes a product useful, a product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. A good design is aesthetic, the aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product. In this aspect the Designer is the main responsible for this environment conservation
