I create from the most emotional and personal place, when words becomes a limited tool. I hope simply to examine myself, to look at my thoughts on a more plastic and perceptible way. Usually, I plan to create a single work but like tears they come one after the other, until relief. I don’t think about it, or plan my technique - I simply cave in to all thoughts and ideas, deciding by feeling what will serve the idea best. I do not have the best technique and I am not an accurate artist, I acknowledge that. Sometimes it can be a helpful fact, but most of the times it makes me feel like I could be better. I could create it in a better way. Most of the time I simply appreciate the opportunity to express myself.

Interview with Sharon Webber-Zvik

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I did not go through the traditional designers path. I have always loved art and was always curious about it - I self studied it. Since 2003, I am the owner of a small design studio.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I specialize in branding small and medium businesses in the fields of various arts and design. I design both web and print: Package Design, Product Design, Posters, Marketing material, Copy-writing, etc. My clients usually approach me with a very preliminary idea of their business, and I transform their ideas into breathing, visual and commercial activities.
What is "design" for you?
Design is creation. It's the beginning of a new idea, it's the understanding on how things should look and feel. It's the realization of dreams and hopes.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I love to design and brand the most difficult subjects. I like the challenge in creating visuals for "unbrandable" topics. I also love creating visuals for artists who relate to my work (singers, bands, writers, etc)
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I truly love my "pain and suffering" project design. I love it because of the research I had to conduct before I created it. I love because it is still evolving through the viewers even after I completed my part in it. I love it because it changed me.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first design I have ever created was for a barbershop in the US.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I love paper. The metamorphosis of the material is intriguing to me, its' circle of life is so clear and engraved in the outcome.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I focus on feelings and emotions. For example: the emotional response to the very first impression.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I feel joy, but almost always combined with little of humbleness
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
How does it effects me? Does it touch me or influence me in any way?
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The awareness to creation of good designs in any design field is rising. I believe that creating designs using new methods and materials is the future.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Music makes me feel creative and full of ideas. Fashion and textiles are great as color inspirations.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My designs are story-tellers. I invest a lot of efforts in the finest and smallest details in my design work.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Israel and local mentality assures that I will always get the most direct feedback (good or bad) for my work. It should be noted, though, that my clients are from all over the world.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
I always prefer artistic freedom. I wish myself and fellow-designers projects with loads of artistic freedom.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Portraits of my great-great-grandparents, Vintage cook-books (I love the layout and typography), Design books from all over the world, An amazing yellow dress I just bought from an Israeli fashion designer.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
On the positive side, designers always have to re-invent themselves.On the negative side, designers always have to re-invent themselves.
What skills are most important for a designer?
I think a designer has to be a good project manager, open minded and able to see far ahead throughout the entire project life cycle.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Paper and pencils. A good scanner.Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
"How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?"
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I would like to create designs that will be more bold and artistic

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
For the past 15 years I create with the acknowledgment that good design and art can change people’s perspectives and open one’s mind and heart. I had the privilege to work with some great establishments (such as the “Pain and Suffering” international research and Google, to name a few) with leading objectives to make the world a much better place. I aim to make sure that every creation of mine will be created from my most truthful and honest emotions and thoughts- hoping to touch the viewers heart and to open some minds.
How did you become a designer?
I think it actually came to my doorstep People came to ask for my work and point of view. For the past 15 years I educated myself with great hunger and passion to create good and to bring out good. In each and every creation I try to be better and to reach out to more hearts.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
It always starts from a personal feeling or emotions that I can translate to something larger in our humankind behaviour. Then I simplify the idea to abstraction. The abstract becomes the statement. The next step will be to make some technique decisions and to pursue for the right materials.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Everything from frustration to the strive to output the idea, through bursts of energy and happiness.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
My mother is an artist, I grew up with the education of colours and expression, my very first memory as a child is about colour and the smell of ink.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I believe that creating in larger mediums and reaching out to more viewers through art galleries and museums is my next step.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Make sure to create good design and to aspire that your next creation will be better. Strive for a change and to make a difference.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I try to keep up with the trends but still to be loyal to my truth.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Good design is something to think about, something to remember. It stays in your thoughts for a while. Hopefully it might change the way you believe things must look or feel (un-expected texture for example )
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I know it’s done when I feel there is nothing to add, sometimes I force changes and its damaging the outcome
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Music is my inspiration, lyrics and words contributes to the muse and ideas. I think that being an Israeli artist is making me very forward with my ideas and sub-texts. I am proud to take inspirations from all religions and to believe mainly in humankind and humanism. I self study different philosophical approaches to enrich my ideas and work.Design and art is about human and life. I make sure to remember that.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I have never studied in a formal institute. I consider myself an autodidact person. I was fortunate enough to grow up in an artistic environment. My mother is a talented painter. My childhood scent of wet ink and chalk, with the images of my mother creating her art. I have never studied in the formal definition of “art school”, but art books and techniques was my second language at home. Everything I learned was by the drive to do better. To be a better designer. I hope to keep learning and to never stop discovering how art and design can enrich me.
How did you become a designer?
I believe that art and design can change people's perspectives, beliefs and point of views. I hope that my art and designs will touch the viewer's hearts and if I am lucky enough, I will be honored to create thought-provoking art and designs.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I believe that I am lucky to be considered a designer. I feel it’s a tremendous responsibility in today’s world to create good designs. A design that serves people and is created for people. I was never forced to become one, but if I am lucky to be one. I hope to be a great one.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
My day to day work is in branding. I try to choose my projects to fit the fields and topics I believe in. However, I do hope to create more thought-provoking art and to pass forward concepts of kindness and tolerance.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
It is a great honor to be considered as a designer, and it’s a wonderful notion to be considered a good one. It’s a fantastic thought to be called as a “Legendary designer”, as it means I did some good and maybe left some legacy behind me. I hope that young designers will never stop learning, will never stop thinking good on this world, and will never stop trying to make a difference. Do not create presumptuous design, create art and design as equals.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I think that a good designer thinks about a project in as matter of great technique and fantastic implementation. A great designer thinks about the effects of the design on others in years to come.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Good design makes an impression. Leaves a feeling or other emotional influence. Something that will not leave my body and mind for a while.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
A good design is not just a pretty one, it’s not the nicer one, It’s the design that makes a difference. If It create a feeling, it will probably serve its’ purposes better and longer. It will touch and effect more people and target audience.
What is your day to day look like?
would probably create more street art. Art that effects people immediately. I would love to combine branding to huge corporate with humane and social topics.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I would love to create street art that shouts the agenda of kindness. A huge project that involves designers and artist from all over the world.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I adore the notion and the beliefs behind the Bauhaus stream. Before that, Alexsandr Rodchenko which used design to create a better world and to be socially engaged (by his beliefs and standards)
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I would have probably become a photographer or a writer. Something related to life stories.
