Interview with Dario Scapitta

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I've studied jewellery design at the Institute of Arts in Valenza (Italy) and then set and costume design at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan. I've always been intersted in arts and design, loving creativity and designing wearable products. If you born in Valenza, jewelry design has to be part of your background, is part of yourself. If I was not a designer, I think that I could became a cook, create with food is amazing too.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Dario Scapitta Design is born almost twoo years ago. When I've moved from Italy to Netherlands I thought that was time to start to work on my own ideas. I'm an independent designer, a "one man show" that works with passion trying to create designs that people would like to wear.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Of course jewellry, but I would like also to design shoes and bags.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
It Is very difficult to say. I love all of them, because any new design is a new challenge, a new experience.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I like many different materials, plastic, leather, concrete, metals, wood. I love sea stones or natural matrials. Materials should be like toys for a designer, and a designer have to play with them. I like 3d printing technology but also handcraft and traditional manufacturing process.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Defining a form, a shape. The aesthetic aspect is very important, how a design will looks.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I'm actually focused on the design itself. I feel a mix of curiosity and rationality. It is when I have a new idea that I feel myself like a kid, when I feel my self surprised like when you see something for the first time.
What makes a design successful?
A mix of many things. But for me, when I see someone happy wearing one of my designs.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
First of all its aesthetic aspect, how it looks, then of course the material used and the functionality.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Being ethically correct and to respect the most great designer ever, mother Nature.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
It depends by the technology and by the designers themselves, we should start to design thinking more about our planet and the future generations.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My last exhibition is currently in London and I really hope to be able to exhibit in New York in the next future.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
From Nature first of all. Arts, fashion, architecture, all these fields are feedding my creativity. Attendig art exhibitions, fashion shows or design events is always good to be inspired. Reading magazines, but above all you must be always curious and never stop to look around you.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I have to say that is always difficult for me to describe my style. Propably I'm still looking for it, I'm trying to defining it. I would like to maintain a connection between my designs but at the same time I like also to be surprising and eclectic.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I'm Italian but I live since 4 years in the Netherlands. In general, Dutch jewelry design is different from the Italian one, lines and form are simple and geometric. A pros can be that working here is that you can experimenting much more, people like more not ordinary objects, due that I'm able to play more with materials and shapes. Until now, I've not had any cons yet.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I'm starting with an idea, a suggestion or a shape that is inspiring me. Most of the time at night, before to sleep. I start to imagine the object in my mind, then I have to fix the idea in paper drowing some sketches. Then I left those sketches, they have to wait for a while. I came back to them studying details, technical solution, colors a materials.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
The TITANIA lamp by Luceplan The PRINCE AHA stool by Kartell A stand mixer by KITCHENAID Two beautiful cats.
Can you describe a day in your life?
Is not easy which day to choose when you are working for your own brand, for a company and you have also a part-time job beside. I woke up, coffee and news, shower. Then I read all emails and plans for the day. I start to work on my projects depending what the priority are. The day goes on like this until evening. It is time for dinner and relax, even if your mind is still thinking about something new. Then is time to sleep, tomorrow can be a completaly different day.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Work with passion and believe in yourself. Do not be arrogant and vain, you are the best but there will be always better than you. Never stop to learn. Do not be afraid to share your experiences.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Creativity and make your ideas real is amazing, but you can not always just design what you want.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
I have always pen and paper with me. Magazine and art books, my smartphone, a pc with 3d software and internet connection. Then every material you can play with it, textil, plastic, metals, woods or paper. Just be inspired.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
When you are working as independent designer and you are alone, designing is only one of the thousand aspect. Planning in long terms it helps, you have to make important choises and being always prepared to handle different situations.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Is very difficult to say and it depends also if you are working with deadline or not.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
Improve my skills, design my next collections and collaborate with other brands.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I develop my designs for my own brand and I'm collaborating with a jewelry company.
