Interview with KAZ Shirane

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I am an artist using the mirror. Interactive space is my initial concept that means the visitor can design the space by themselves. So the mirror is the best material to realize my concept.
What is "design" for you?
For me, the design is a solution for the client. My studio aims to suggest beyond more. So My studio focuses on Art.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I like to see a design that I have never seen. Also, I love to know their background that has their own style.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
I start to know what they don't like. If they are very clear, it makes to reduce wasted time for us.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
We prefer to light weighting material. For example, paper, metal, glass.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
What is the challenge for me? then what is the benefit of the client.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
As always, I feel I don't have enough time when I design. I always ask my self, are you enjoying?
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
First of all, I wanted to see how to feel in the work. second of all, what is happening here? Finally, Was it realize what I wanted to do?
What makes a design successful?
To hear everything including what the client and team member said. Also, to understand what I wanted to do.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Good. Because it is very difficult to be judged as good for design. I consider what bad was. but it seems good is very important.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
for society, it is very important to mention something new. For the environment, We should think about what we are making.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Technology design will be the mainstream. On the other hand, the hand-made object will be also important.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
During the working. I always seek how to make the idea. But the only way I know right now is working and working.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
As I mentioned, I am always using a mirror. I noticed through my work if we can focus on one thing. the scene would be spread. The is my discovery.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Currently living in Tokyo, Japan. My concept "Interactive space" was affected by an old Japanese house that has fusuma, moving the slide door. It inspired me to come to appear the concept.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
To know why you chose the designer. The designer devotes 100% to you, however, sometimes conflict may have happened. Because during communication, we miss the most important thing, goal. sometimes some designer doesn't hear anything the client requirement. If so, you can find another one. it is close to your goal. This is my opinion.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
At first, I hear all over the project from the client. then I start to hear the detail more. e.g. what you don't like.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I always wokinng in the client time. So if there are several project around the world that makes me confused!!
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
if you won't take a risk, you won't get any benefit. And if you are not suitable in your place, don't hesite move another place.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
There is no negative thing to be a designer if you wish. There is only positive thing in the process of being a createor.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Even if I work for new project, I develop previous work. In other work, I won't think from nothing.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I develop own software to realize my project that makes also me to reduce a lot of time but to create many ideas. That's the reason I focus on my thing.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Depend on the project, for permanent project, it took one year half. When exhibit previouswork in other place, it won't take long time.
