Interview with Nicolò Caruso

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have always wished to be a designer. I have studied product design oriented fashion at the Politecnico of Milan; after I attended a Master in lighting design in the same institute.
What is "design" for you?
Design is a field of knowledge that may improve the quality of human life and elevate the beauty of the places to a superior level.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
My favorite design is the Sushi armchair by Carlo Colombo for Zanotta.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
The means of communication has a great impact and responsibility on society. Industrialization without criteria has responsibility on environment. The designer can make a sense of change.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My design style is a marriage between essentiality and symbolism. For example, the shape of the circle is abundant in my job because it is simple and it expresses an energetic field.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Italy, therefore the Italian cultural heritage has been very important in my formation. One should be able to create a good design anywhere.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I develop my design in my mind during some days, after I elaborate the project on my computer and I make some changes.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Nessino Artemide, Castore Artemide, Edge Artemide, Amami Danese, Cubo Danese.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
The positive and negative aspect of being a designer is being an artist.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
I think that one cannot specify an exact time to design an object of design. It may take a few years as a few days, I reckon that experience has a key role.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I prefer to design lamps because light has a fundamental role in furnishing an environment.
