Interview with Bem Robinson

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I am a graduate of product design from Nottingham Trent University graduating in July 2014 , I have always been a creative person questioning things and wanting to invent
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
My glasses as I can see from them I am emotionally atteched to the design
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Happiness when a project is going well , frustration when a project is slow
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
To be social conscious of processes as to not damage the environment more or the health and well being of others
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
I think the design field is turning more to technology and 3d printing I would like to see more craft based designs emerge
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Last exhibition was new designers 2014 in London, the next exhibition will be Design Junction in September 2014 part of London Design Week
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My inspiration comes form various places , my peers and family, art and nature
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I like curves in my design , also I like my work to stand out therefore I owuld so my design style is quite bold but also risky
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
England. It has a wealth of multicultural heritage that aids me in design, however it is really abroad in Scandinavia that my design inspiration comes from
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
They can look at a good portfolio but most importantly companies need to find a designer whos ethos and personality fits in with them
Can you describe a day in your life?
On a project day I wake up check emails, model in the workshop and repeat until I find a process that I am happy with although everyday is different
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Its a creative laid back industry , however underpaid and work can become tedious
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Saw, Lathe , Silcone , Scalpel , Duck Taper Screwdriver . Solidworks 3ds max Rhino Autocad
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I plan , I have a journal in which I set deadlines for myself to hit
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Approximately 4-8 weeks depending on budget and size of project
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
Gain a job or commissions to make more items, sell more items to retail
