About Shin-Yuan Fang

Wei Yi International Design Associates was founded by designer Shin-Yuan Fang (Fang) in 2003. To develop his design concept, Fang turn it into a brand in 2009. Fang used a unique Chinese culture, calligraphy to create a symbol for his brand, which represents the concept of his design associates. The design associates were constituted by 3 departments: Design, Casa and Art. Design: Architectures and interior designs including villas, shopping malls, offices and public areas. Casa: Design furniture and set up its own series. Art: Creating artwork or ornament, it can provide unique installations for those projects.

Interview with Shin-Yuan Fang

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
At first, I wanted to be an artist because I loved to draw. A wild imagination spurred my interest in art.Art class in school.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Wei Yi international design associates now focuses on interior design, research and planning. we intent is to find a new way of life that is substantial but not excessive in terms of materials and furnishings.
What is "design" for you?
Instead of pursuing fashion, we pursues the feels of peace and harmonious in the space.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
i was fascinated by the beauty, loneliness and harmonious of oriental aesthetics.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
simple materials and linear create a space which can transform into different modus. it emphasizes the usage of elements.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
The first emotions I feel are optimism and curiosity. During the artistic process I am careful.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I founded Wei Yi international design associates in 2003. After i graduation from NTUA, and M.A. CYCU Institute.I worked for Chris Yao and C.S.Lee Design Consulting Inc.
How did you become a designer?
My favorite thing to do as a child was to play with blocks.At first, I wanted to be an artist because I loved to draw. A wild imagination spurred my interest in art.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
How to visualize the picture in my mind while satisfying the client’s needs is my main priority. Minimalism is my style.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
The first emotions I feel are optimism and curiosity. During the artistic process I am careful. In the end, I feel joy and a strong sense of achievement.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Continue to produce good designs and take on different projects.Through travel and reading to enrich my spirit and expand my horizons.I hope to work on a boutique resort.I want to be the real me.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Continuously dig through new information to provide updated and more suitable solutions to satisfy the client’s needs.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
From media articles and the thoughts of fellow designers. And of course, from winning international awards, too.
Who is your favourite designer?
I admire Tadao Ando.If i can given a chance to talk with a single dead designer, i think is Le Corbusier.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
My lifestyle is simple. Other than work, I read, cook, cycle and travel.Taipei is an interesting city, rich in culture with a mix of old and new.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Creating beautiful things is always placed ahead of business practices.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
I give without seeking attention. Medical resources in Eastern Taiwan are relatively scarce. For over 10 years, we donated a fixed percentage of our profits from every case to the Mennonite Christian Hospital for its construction and operation.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
1. Reflect on your own creativity. 2. Allow others to know your work. 3. Get in touch with the world.It allows people to get to know me and understand my design ideas. I hope to share and discuss these thoughts with others.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I graduated from NTUA. And worked for KRIS YAO ARTECH and Steven Leach.
How did you become a designer?
A house should be a place where you enjoy being, where you feel good, and where you can relax. So I want to do this.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Listen to my instinct when I am working allows me to improvise in my own way.
Who is your favourite designer?
When styling spaces, a few simple and inexpensive alterations can result in an entirely different ambiance.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
I love to travel and interested in observing cities’ phenomena.
