About Gilles Laot

Born in 1975, Gilles found his true path in metalwork, beginning the Tour de France in 1993 with the association of Compagnons du Devoir as a boilermaker. Since his Tour de France, he has specialised in the shaping of metals and artistic work, joining the Foundation de Coubertin, as artistic boilermaker and brass worker, where he uses his skill in realisation of commissions for several major artists of international fame. Interview with Gilles Laot

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I was always attracted to design and I have integrated 'Les Companions du devoir' in order to perfect my skills.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I would be interested to work on my own designs, I have been working for world renown artists and I feel that I am ready to start my own journey.
What makes a design successful?
It's originality,decorative aspect, it's form and functionality
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
I think that design remains mainly in terms of construction and furnitures but everything is evolving
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
In 2009 Rotary Club, I 'm keen to present my work in other exhibitions
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
They emerge from nature, I love the artists HR Giger. My source of inspiration comes from comics, Sci-Fi movies and ife
How do you work with companies?
I am currently working with a company an things are going very well
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
I own quite an extensive collection of vases that I have produced
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I generally work extra time during the Week ends to finish my projects
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
I currently working on a vase inspired from the movie Prometheus
