Interview with Beck Storer

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
From a very early age I can remember myself drawing. Drawing with crayons, pencils, chalk - anything I could get my hands on!
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
The Cutaway is a creative studio that upholds 3 basic values. We Make, Create and Play. We make beautiful tangible communication engagements through our love for design and craft. We create opportunities and inspiration for the next generation of designers with our involvement in design education. And we play! We love what we do and have fun doing it.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Research - Research is paramount for any successful design outcome.
What makes a design successful?
When that unexpected 1% comes to life. In all our projects we look for the exclusive extra 1% - the moment when you take the design that extra one step and it succeeds all expectations
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Right now, this very minute, creativity is most important commodity to invest in today's world. Creativity will form the new ideas, the innovative solutions that will disrupt our world for the better. We are starting to see this right now with the rise of entrepreneurial design....
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
An old vintage Australian Postal letterbox. A retro public phone from Indonesia. A large piece of typography found on the streets of Melbourne. A collection of vintage printers letter blocks made from wood. My children's drawings.
