About Doyi Park

Doyi Park graduated from Parsons the New school of design in 2016 with BFA Degree in Womenswear. She was awarded Dean scholarship while at the school and won the first place in the IDA(International Design Award) contest for student. She have completed 1-year machine knitting course in Seoul and served an internship at the Levy Group in New York. She is currently working as a fashion designer of her own brand. She strongly believes that garments hold symbolic, aesthetic and communicative roles in society, Therefore she tried to find the equilibrium between imagination and practicality throughout her design.

Interview with Doyi Park

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I was just a normal korean high school student who studied general subjects such as science, math, society ect,. One day I thought deeply what I am really want to do and realized I am interested in art and design. That is why I decided to go to the design school and studied fashion design.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My design studio is like a design lab. Since I am a young designer who recently graduated, I still try to find my own style and research what I can produce for the future clients. So, now my company is more like an experimental space.
What is "design" for you?
Showing my thought to the public. I am a introspective person. So design is the best way showing my thought and communicating with the society. In private aspect, design lead me to think who I am and explore myself.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I really like designing the clothes among of several products. This is because, it seems like the encounter point meeting the one's personality and society. In general, people said fashion is the way to show one's individuality. So it can be changed in various ways depend on each persons. That is way I am interested in fashion and like to design the clothes.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Alexander Mcqueen's collection. He has his own strong style and I respect that.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first thing I design for my own brand is a Mannerism collection which is my graduation work.
When do you feel the most creative?
The moment when I mix all the processes I did. To create the collection, I did the research, sketching, draping, fabric manipulation, etc,. I collected all the processes and mixed each steps. That point, I felt the most creative and excited.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Reality. I know creativity and imagination is important aspect for the designing somthing but still I believe that design is like the practical art. It means that it have to interactive with the public or society. So, I consider importantly it is feasible in real life.
What makes a design successful?
Proper approach. Which means that it is important to finding the balance between the designer's creativity and client's desire.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Practicality. As I mention before, to me design is like the finding the balance between the function and imagination. So if it is useless or no one want it, I don't think it is good design.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
I guess the environment and high technology aspect will be considered importantly.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
I don't have exhibition experience yet but I want to hold my exhibiton in New York someday. Since New York is the place I studied the design and changed my perspective.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Currently I live in Korea. The most advantage living in korea is I can feel sense of stability and comfort. The cons is that it is too far to go to New York and Europe.
How do you work with companies?
First, I usually send my draping or prototype with sketches to the pattern maker. Then we talk about the detailed things.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
I think that it is important the designers know the structure of their clothes. It feel like they study hard to make it better or improved. I guess these people can explain specific need or definite requirements in detail.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
After I decide the concept, I do research. Then I check which aspect will be main key point- construction or print. In accordance with the critical point, I explore the draping or print developing. After that, I do sketches. I keep repeatly rotating these steps.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Bed, flower vase, jewel box, earring box, vanity table.The common features of these objects are elegance and classic.
Can you describe a day in your life?
These days, I spends most of my time for studying how to make a brand or doing the design research for opening my own brand.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
It is a little bit awkward to me giving the advice to young designers since I am also a young designer. I hope they can find their own style and enjoy their work.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
The positive thing is that it is possible to express their own world. Also it can be visualized and objectified one's idea or abstract feeling.
What skills are most important for a designer?
The ability to make and edit well the imagination becomes possible.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I left the time as much as I can only for the designing during the weekday.
What was your most important job experience?
I don't have a lot of job experience yet. To me the senior year was the most important work experience. At that time, I really focused on the collection and tried to do my best. Regardless of the result, I enjoyed most of the design process and could sure it will be happy to work as a designer.
Who are some of your clients?
I just started to open my brand so I don't have the client list yet.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Sketches because everything is possible if I only have a pen and paper.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
As a start-up company, I want to participate some events that helping or promoting young fashion designers. Also I will prepare new collection and want to join fashion week or fashion competition.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
I am preparing a new collection. It will be constructed silhouette with some details like I did in prior collection but it will have more joyful and bright atmospher.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I studied at Parsons the new school of design in New York and graduated in 2016 with BFA degree in womenswear. Currently I work as a fashion designer for my brand.
How did you become a designer?
While I was in school, I realized that how much I like to explore designing process and developing concept. That is why I decide to be a designer.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I like combining the imagination and reality. To me, fashion garment is like daily art object.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I am very excited and enjoying the design process. Every steps is like creating something new and it makes me feel happy and exciting.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
When I was young, I lived small village and most of the surrounding things were similar. So I always wanted to find something new or different and enjoyed to make something. I guess these background is like a start point to me to be a designer.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I will keep developing my design and participating several competitions to show my collections.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
I am also still working on to be a good designer, so it is embarrassed to give suggestion. I hope they can enjoy their work so they can work happily until rest of the life.
What is your day to day look like?
I used to research about my collection concept and draw some sketches and make prototype during the day.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I don't care about trend that much but sometimes I check the trend by seeing the runway show.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
I look at the reactions of the people and then try to wear it. if they like the concept, clothes and feel comfortable in my clothes, I think it is pretty good.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I usually keep an open tab in my mind to make earlier designs better. so it is hard to totally satisfied my design.
What is your biggest design work?
Until now, I only made one collection called mannerism. It was my graduation collection from the school. I could learn whole design process during the making collection. So I am pretty happy about it and feel proud since I could won 2 competitions because of this collection.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
There is a big river in front of my home. I used to walk there listing the music. These moment used to give several emotions to me and relax.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I think every women is like art. So I want my clothes to be a beautiful artistic touch that can make them more beautiful and confidence.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
I always try to consider the environment when I design the garment. I like to use eco friendly fabric and try to make timeless garment.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
I could learn how to prepare design competition through the A' Design Award. I am really appreciated and it will be an unforgettable memory.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
Before I attend the Parsons, I was a jsut normal Korean high school student who stuied gerneal subjects such as math, science, society and so on. While I was in the design school I could explore various art and design fields.
How did you become a designer?
It is exciting process to me to visualized and objectified my idea and abstractive thought. Even though it takes time comsuming, I felt pround and satisfied for that.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
It is a little bit embarrassed to hear design legend, since I am a also young designer. I think it is important to enjoy the work and satisfied their work.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I guess great designer has more strong style and satisfys the client's desire.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I think good design don't have any useless factor. Each elements do the role as the function,aesthetic way, efficiency and so on.
What is your day to day look like?
I want to design for the people who is confidence and has attractive soul. Hoping to make them looks more beautiful and stand out through my garment.
What is your biggest design work?
I like all the designed structures in Rome. It is literally breathtakingly beautiful and strong atmosphere.
Who is your favourite designer?
My first work which is the Mannerism collection. while I prepared this collection, I could learn how to enjoy the work and be focus about it. Even though most of the design process were time consuming, I felt valuable and realized that it will be great to live as a designer. Therefore, regardless of the result, it is significant design collection to me.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Do more research and try to find the elements that people want or need. Then I try to apply these to the deisgn.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
I would be a painter. I really love drawing, sketching, and painting.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
To me, design is like a interaction between me and the public. Even though the outcome comes from my though and idea, eventually it need people's reaction and feedback.
