Interview with Matteo Cremasco

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I graduated from public school: I.P.S.I.A. Andrea Scotton located in Bassano del Grappa, first of all I'm proud to be curious, adaptable, extroverted and empathetic, this way of being allowed me to enjoy books and collect a lot of experiences, contaminations and skills from all the people/culture with which I come in contact. I want to pursuit my passion for design because I think that is a wonderful job! When I was Young I wanted to be an astronaut.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I don't hold a company and I'm not part of a design studio, I do things for passion, this is the key to make great design I think.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I don't have a favourite material, Platform or technology, I'm a designer so I will choose the right material the right Platform and the right technology on the basis of the project.
When do you feel the most creative?
when I'm relaxed and I'm relaxed when I'm surrounded by nature. A lot of people have lost this interactions.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
happyness and thankfulness, sometime I feel a little pressure but is ok.
What makes a design successful?
the target of people that you want to sell it, the visibility, and indeed the brand. I think that most of the people buy design stuff only because they are from a famous brand.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
We are living in a big gap for humanity and the planet earth so in my opinion all the people must consider sustainability first.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
the responsibilities of a designer are HUGE because we create the future. The designer figure will be very important in the future for a simply reason, in the future all the people will become designers thanks to science robots and internet. An example of that future is coming out with 3d printers.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The future of design will be to ensure and improve humans achievements, and to bring that achievements out of the earth.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I'm influenced by science, art, nature, space and cultures all over the world. Nature is the most important because we all come from nature
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My approach to design is unconventional, I hate planned obsolescence because in my opinion choke the real design. We live in strange time but I hope to last enough to see the world change. I don't have a design style, this is the key. I'm continuously influenced by other culture and traditions and I love that because allow me to collect different experiences and way of thinking.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Italy and of course I feel che cultural Heritage of my country, of my region, and i'm extremely proud of my country (exept bureaucracy and politics that really sucks in Italy) but at the same time I feel like a Citizen of the world and this is really important to me.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
You are a designer not a politician so don't talk too much and work hard, design for yourself, design and plan something that is really good for yourself and for the world, the best ideas are not forced!
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
positives thins are: you are Always thinking about something, you are Always curious and you learn something new every day. the cons are: if you're not a simply and chill person you probably get mad or overstressed!
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Books a lot of books, travels, awkward situations, conversations with strangers, pen, paper, my immagination passion a computer and a 3d software
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I think that all the people must learn to stop doing things when they are tired, under pressure, or stressed, we must learn to take a break to our job. Creativity and productivity decreases with increasing of working hours. Work less and you will be more productive.
What was your most important job experience?
I think this one, because this experience show me the power of ideas.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I prefer to work on a team because in a team I can learn and improve myself, but I've worked alone in the last one.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

Designer of the Day Interview with Matteo Cremasco

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I think that all humans are designers, just someone is better than others, I saw that visiting different places around earth talking with the people and studyng cultures.
How did you become a designer?
I studied in a professional school and I became furniture and interiors technician, after that I worked and during my free time I studied the interactions between cultures and design, not only in furniture design, I tried to learn the real meaning of design. What I really like about design is that my mind is always challenged, the Idea that I can create something functional, aesthetic, sustainable, minimalistic, with my brain is something that always fascinated myself and gave me a lot of satisfactions.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
when I'm working to a new project the main aspect is sustainability, I always try to work with sustainable materials and I always try to think about functionality, I start with a sketch and then I work on pc.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I think that It's a bless to be able to understand the process of creativity, to live with it, to think always like a designer, in every aspect of life, sometime it's difficult because not all the people can understand me, so sometimes I feel isolated even if I'm in a group. This emotions are dissolved when I get to the point, I mean, when you see your idea that comes to life, and a lot of people around the world likes it, for me it's waow It's a feeling that is so huge that you must try because I can't explain it.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I think empathy, curiosity, nature observation, creativity and culture are the skills that helped me and will help me in the future.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I want to work till I'm able to build/ buy a sustainable house near the mountains/ forests in some cool place on earth, before that I want to design some sustainable and cool furniture, and maybe be awarded again.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
The best advice is to observe nature, to study the ancient cultures, to improve the ancient methods with the technology of our time, don't hate the past, just learn from it and do better.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
It's difficult to answer this question, there will be always a way to improve design, mine design, others design, anyway the perfect design in my opinion is when you saw that, and you say "yes, it's perfect, I can't/ improve it or do better" and for a designer it's not easy to say these words.
What is your biggest design work?
Dagaz, It's a bed, was a hard challenge, only a few told me that was a great design before I got awarded, I'm working on a lot of project, want to know more? This is my world: matteocremasco.com
Who is your favourite designer?
I don't have a favourite designer, every designer is good in something, I would like to talk with as many designers as possible.
