Interview with Torres Arquitetos

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I have a degree in Architecture and Urbanism, and my journey has always been driven by creativity and a passion for transforming spaces. Since I was a child, I loved drawing and imagining how environments could be improved, so becoming a designer felt natural.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My studio, Torres Arquitetos, specializes in high-standard residential and commercial projects. We aim to combine creativity, modernity, and functionality, delivering unique spaces tailored to our clients’ visions.
What is "design" for you?
Design is a bridge between aesthetics, functionality, and human experience. It’s about creating purposeful solutions that improve people’s lives and connect them emotionally to spaces.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I enjoy designing spaces that combine elegance and practicality, especially residential projects where I can deeply connect with the clients’ needs and transform their daily lives.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
One of my favorites was the Le Dune Residential, where we incorporated natural light, sustainable materials and a volume on a human scale.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first project I developed was a small cabin surrounded by nature.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I love working with natural wood for its warmth and versatility, and I frequently use BIM software like Revit for precise and collaborative designs.
When do you feel the most creative?
I feel most creative in the early mornings or late at night when the world is quiet, and I can focus without distractions.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I focus on the balance between aesthetics, functionality, and the emotional impact of the space.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I feel a mix of excitement and serenity, like solving a puzzle while bringing beauty to the project.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
I feel very proud and satisfied, especially when I see the positive impact the project has on the lives of clients and the city.
What makes a design successful?
A successful design is one that fulfills its purpose, connects with users, and stands the test of time.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I first consider its functionality, followed by how well it integrates with its environment and its overall aesthetic.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designers have a responsibility to create sustainable, inclusive, and accessible solutions that improve communities and respect the planet.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The field is embracing sustainability, technology, and personalization. The future lies in integrating smart solutions with environmentally conscious designs.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
The last exhibition we participated in was Rigenera, curated by the Brazilian Institute of Architects in the city of Curitiba.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I draw inspiration from nature, architecture history, and travel. Visiting new places and studying diverse cultures fuel my creativity.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My style is modern, elegant, and functional. It’s driven by a desire to create spaces that are timeless and uniquely personal.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The rich cultural heritage influences my designs through the use of natural materials and appreciation for local craftsmanship. The main challenge is balancing creativity with budget constraints.
How do you work with companies?
I work collaboratively, ensuring a deep understanding of their brand identity and goals to deliver designs that reflect their essence.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Companies should prioritize designers who listen, communicate clearly, and have a portfolio that aligns with their vision.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
My process begins with understanding the client’s needs, researching the site, and brainstorming concepts. From there, I move to sketches, 3D modeling, and detailed project development.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
A statement armchair, minimalist light fixtures, a handmade ceramic vase, a geometric rug, and custom shelving.
Can you describe a day in your life?
My day starts early with coffee and planning. I spend mornings designing and attending meetings, afternoons visiting project sites, and evenings reflecting on concepts or sketching ideas.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Stay curious, always learn, and don’t fear making mistakes. Collaborate, and most importantly, develop your own unique voice in design.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
The positives are creativity and the ability to transform spaces. The negatives are tight deadlines and balancing client expectations.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I use project management tools and break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to stay on track.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends on the complexity, but usually between a few months and a year.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
Can you make this fit within my budget without compromising the quality?
What was your most important job experience?
Collaborating on a large-scale residential project that challenged me creatively and technically.

I enjoy residential projects because of the personal connection and impact they have on daily life.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
To expand Torres Arquitetos’ portfolio with more sustainable and cutting-edge projects.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I work with a talented team, combining our skills to create the best solutions.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Yes, a high-end residential building that integrates green technologies and modern aesthetics.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
Design is more than a profession for me; it’s a way of seeing the world and creating meaningful connections.

Extended Interview with Torres Arquitetos

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
Torres Arquitetos is a company dedicated to the development of architectural and urban projects, owned by architect Alberto Torres, who graduated from UFRGS in 1991, and architect Carolina Torres, who graduated from PUCRS in 2021. We have always been interested in projects that combine creativity and functionality. During college, Carolina dedicated herself to exploring both architectural design and the relationship between spaces and people in the communities of indigenous Brazilian peoples.
How did you become a designer?
The power to transform spaces and create unique experiences motivates me daily. I became a designer because I have always been fascinated by how the environment around us shapes our emotions, behaviors and memories.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I've always enjoyed drawing and imagining how spaces could be different. It was a natural choice.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
We design high-end homes, commercial spaces and houses. I want to delve deeper into projects that integrate sustainability, technology and innovation, such as green buildings, public spaces and urban solutions that promote well-being.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Study constantly, seek inspiration in different areas, learn from criticism and, above all, develop a unique style.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A good designer creates something that is both functional and beautiful; a great designer goes beyond that, bringing innovation, authenticity and emotional impact. This is someone who deeply understands the context and transforms needs into extraordinary solutions.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Good design is one that balances functionality, aesthetics, and purpose. It should meet the user’s needs, create an emotional connection, and at the same time stand the test of time. I judge good design by its ability to improve people’s lives and integrate into its context in a unique and efficient way.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Good design adds value to everyday life, improves the user experience and increases the perception of quality. It has the power to transform a space, creating identity and authenticity. Investing in good design means investing in durability, innovation and solutions that transcend the ordinary.
What is your day to day look like?
Eu adoraria projetar espaços urbanos inclusivos e sustentáveis para comunidades que carecem de infraestrutura de qualidade. Esses projetos têm um impacto social significativo e redefinem como as pessoas se conectam com os espaços ao seu redor.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
My dream project is to design a space of shelter, welcome and cultural appreciation for Brazilian indigenous communities.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Listening is my secret ingredient. Deeply understanding the needs of clients and respecting the history of the place are key to creating authentic designs.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Lina Bo Bardi, Paulo Mendes da Rocha,Vilanova Artigas, Affonso Eduardo Reidy
What is your biggest design work?
I admire Mam, by Paulo Mendes da Rocha, for its brutalist simplicity, and MASP, by Lina Bo Bardi, for its timeless functionality.
Who is your favourite designer?
My best design is always the next one. Each project reflects evolution and innovation, but I like to highlight the Le Dune residential project that we designed, for the way it integrated natural light, minimalism and comfort, and fit into the surroundings.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Constantly studying, traveling to expose myself to different cultures and collaborating with other professionals. I seek to learn something new in each project.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Probably something related to art or fashion, because both are linked to people's understanding and creative expression.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Design is about creating with purpose. It is the bridge between functionality and emotion, always seeking to improve the human experience.
