Interview with Leung Jia Jun

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Previously I was studying Interior design and decided to make a switch to industrial design after designing furniture.I always wanted to be an artist, but I believed that to be a design, you sometimes have to be an artist.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am working individually for my individual creation. Design studio, currently I am working on Tech wearables for AR glasses.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I love designing sustainable design, green design, because you can be an artist in your creation.I do enjoyed designing tech products, because then I will understand the constraints and limitations
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
using low cost material to turn into something usable and looks premium.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Percieved appearance of an object, how to find ways to change the impression of the object at the first glance.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Fulfilling but always filled with frustrations. Exciting moments only come when you see that your idea works and you are moving forward to make it into a reality. Frustration is when you could not get things right and there are many external factors.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
designers need to be humble and always look at the users instead of using design as an expressing piece.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design focused more on the users and less on the personal style of the designer
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Every morning come up with ideation and concepts, afternoon execute and test them out. Evening might be a good timing relax and expose to new things.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Good design is timeless and hidden.sometimes I am very stubborn with my design, and kept pushing. After a few days or weeks, when i looked back and the work i created, I might have the persepctive that it was over done.Sometimes, in design I have to learn to let go.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I stayed in singapore, but currently I moved to Beijing China, to find new opportunities. Culture plays a big part in the growth of a designer. Because the more a designer is exposed to new things, he will see different things.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
go beyond looking for awards and achievement, because every designer is different.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I think designers need to have personal style, following others might take aways my thinking process and thoughts. It is a good idea to look and get inspirations.

Every morning come up with ideation and concepts, afternoon execute and test them out. Evening might be a good timing relax and expose to new things.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
designers need to learn to let go of personal styles to learn more about users and consumers.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
My current plan is to find new opportunities in the China market. my Future plans are to be flexible and come up with good designs that is timeless and can be adapted in any market, fit the end users, and learn how to be a great designer.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I have a mix of both, because I started out alone. With the crafts that i built, I worked with partners and test my crafts and find ways to refine it.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
Good design is a pursuit of good lifestyle.Good does not mean that it is beautiful on the exterior, but it is thebalance of beauty on the exterior and interior.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I would say I have about 8 years experience. In my past projects, I have worked with Samsung, Guerlain.etc. Now I am trying to go into the China market and find a new opportunity.Previously I was studying Interior design and decided to make a switch to industrial design after designing furniture.
How did you become a designer?
It started with a poor academic records in school that I started doodling in class and found out that I enjoy creating something. It was an internal drive that after a drawing, i started to think how can i make it a model.So i went on deeper trying hard to understand spaces and architecture. in this process found out that I enjoy doing product design.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Sketching - Hand making - Software - critical thinkingthese 3 skills have to be matched with critical thinking, because the idea behind is more important.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Fulfilling but always filled with frustrations. Exciting moments only come when you see that your idea works and you are moving forward to make it into a reality. Frustration is when you could not get things right and there are many external factors.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
My Design Journey had been filled with ups and downs, it was filled with more disappointment. And I feel that able t accept that and try again the next day. That is something I feel that it has shaped me.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
I've been finding non profit organizations to take my design solutions and upscale them. If oranges can be re-use, as bags, why do we have to use leather when it is damaging to the earth.

a great designer needs many years of experience and is very patient. a good design is very passionate but needs to learn to be patient
