Interview with Na An

What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I like natural materials full of charm, such as paper, stone and wood.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
It's very complicated. As someone said, the process is like first love.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Every design is like a child. When the design is finished, the most emotion is love and pride.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designers must take positive responsibility for human harmony and social development.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My inspiration comes from real life. Participating in competitions, exhibitions, learning from different perspectives and communicating with designers are all my inspiration sources.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Communicate with clients, collect materials, seek inspiration, create for the first time, communicate and modify, adjust again, communicate and modify, confirm finally and materialize.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
As a designer, the advantage is to be able to touch a very wide range of fields, but the disadvantage is the lack of boundaries between work and life.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
The visibility and readability of visual symbols are the most important.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
This needs to be based on the characteristics of the project and user needs.
What was your most important job experience?
Book design. I think that from the planning, layout, printing, binding, technology and communication to learn the importance of details and integration.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I really enjoy studying some artistic creations in the field of history and culture.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I want to do a series of graphic and visual design in history and culture.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I have my own team, but usually I prefer to work independently. If it is necessary to create a project, I will coordinate with the team to complete it together.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
This year, we will have two major themes: Fight against COVID-19 and Food conservation. Both themes are nonprofit creations aimed at global public health and interlocking food problems. Designers should take more public responsibility.
