Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Hexagón is a Design Studio and registered trademark founded by two Mexican industrial designers, it’s focused on geometric abstraction and manipulation, using innovative technics and technologies, transforming everyday-objects into functional art pieces. Its goal is to position itself as leader in quality, aesthetics and innovation at an international level.
What is "design" for you?
Is everything that serves as a tool to project a creative idea in real life
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
We prefer interior products that not only are beautiful but more importantly functional.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Probably our wine cellar, its made of natural wood and computerized cut. It is meant for young couples who want to decorate their living place while storing their wine in the best way posible.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Material probably wood, platform SolidWorks, technology anything that includes precision cutting (laser, water, CNC, etc)
When do you feel the most creative?
Probably while dreaming or at any given time during the day a crazy idea might come to mind, we later analyze and develop some of this ideas.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Its our obligation to create things that contribute to our society thats why for us function is so important

We are becoming better for our environment and also technology helps to create things

How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I don't think we can settle ourselves into one particular style but you would se through all our designs that they are assembled, geometric and symmetric
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
We live in México, the pros of living here are that design has been getting stronger and respected through the last decades, the cons are that most people don't value the complexity of design and this often makes it difficult to sell.
How do you work with companies?
We have had good experiences with companies although we prefer working independently
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Understand what is it that you're trying to solve before going to the designer.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Its a very long process, it all begins with an idea that then becomes a brainstorm, sometimes the ideas are completely shifted from what they were supposed to be at the beginning, then comes sketching, drafting, rendering, prototyping, experimenting, polishing and finally selling
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Bookshelf, Hexagon winecellar, Hexagon Stool, Alessi wineopener, Zaha Hadid's miniature yacht model
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
We ourselves are really young, our best advice would be start now! Don't waste anytime, everyday is experience gained, and to be a great designer you need tons of that
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
You are able to create almost anything with enough dedication, I don't think there are any negatives if you put all your effort in what you love.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Well you need to have priorities, sometimes finishing a design is the priority so we'll sleep really few hours between days.

Remodeling is one of our favorite jobs because we get to see an entire space become something different, hopefully better

Extended Interview with Hexagón

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
We are both students of last semester in the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, currently studying the degree in Industrial Design. We have both gained, individually and as a team, recognition inside and outside the university. We are very interested in studying abroad and would love to do a master's degree in interior and furniture design.
How did you become a designer?
We are young designers so we are highly motivated to acquire a lot of experience and gain international recognition by representing Mexican design and in this way inspire more young people to share their talent and passion for design.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Being designers is a passion that we discovered over time, however we fell in love with it the minute we started to study it and it is something that is growing more and more in us.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
We love experimenting with geometry and everyday objects to turn them into functional art, you could say that today we are working more in product design. However we would like to get involved in interior and furniture design, without a doubt is a goal that we want to reach.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
As young designers we would like to tell you to start as soon as possible to chase your dream without fear of failure because with time and mistakes you only gain wisdom and experience which are two vital tools for success.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A great designer does not settle, he seeks to leave the comfort zone and find new challenges without lowering his standards. Does not give up and never let failure stop him. A great designer always looks forward to new experiences and back to learn from his mistakes.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
A great design needs to be something innovative that achieves a connection with the user on many levels, it has to be aesthetic and functional. It´s value proposal has to be strong enough to be able to differentiate it from the rest.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Good design generates a change in the perception and in the mood of the people.
Who is your favourite designer?
The wine cellar because of it´s elegance and complexity but mainly because of it´s functionality.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Is everything that serves as a tool to project a creative idea in real life.
