Interview with Eduardo Baroni

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
As a child I always tried to create my own toys. I used parts of broken toys to build new ones. I also liked to disassemble anything I could to see how it worked and sometimes even fix it. I liked to create new things, to imagine new functions for existing products.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I work as a small design studio developing new products for furniture companies anywhere in the world.
What is "design" for you?
Design for me is comunication. Designing a peace of furniture involves creating a conection between manufacturer, stores and final consumer. A product must say something about itself, about it´s owner and about it´s manufacturer. When you are looking for a chair you are not just looking for something to seat on. Instead you are going to buy the chair that best comunicates with you the values that it stands for. You are looking for a chair that relates to who you are.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I like designing products that offers a new interpretation on old stabilished rules or a new suggestion of use for common objects.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
The one that i am working on is always my favorite because it is still a mistery to be solved.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
It was a bar stool for a large furniture store in Brazil. It was not a huge success, but it was a spark that led me to furniture design.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I like to mix materials, to use the contrast between materials to create new forms, textures and feelings.
When do you feel the most creative?
I think the mornings, especially the sunny ones, stimulate my creativity.
What makes a design successful?
As I said before the product should communicate with consumer. When this communication creates a connection with people it's very likely to be a successful product.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
The first thing a product should do is to attract your eyes. If it fails on this it's already a bad design.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
I try to do my work with honesty and to develop products that will have a real function and a long life on this planet.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
In the near future I believe design will be more customizable to individual needs. Consumers will be more involved in the development of new products.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My last exhibition was in Rio de Janeiro in 2017. Milan is always the place to be seen I wish I will be there next year,
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Inspiration come from everything that I see. Nature, books, art, everything is inspiring if you are aware to see it.
How do you work with companies?
I usually receive a demand from the company and try to create some concepts for them to choose wich one is more
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
There should be a good relationship between company and designer. Designers got to have freedom to criticize and to try to push some limits of the client to achieve good results. This process should not be a game of tug of war, instead it should be a friendly brainstorming where both parts will be rewarded. The best designer in the world won't be able to do much if the communication between the parts is not good.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends a lot for each company that I work with because I depend on their feedback and their
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I usually work alone in the conceptual design process and then with the furniture company team of engineers and prototype makers to go from the aproved design concept to the final product.
