Interview with Weizhi Cao

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I am a full-time associate professor at the School of Industrial Design, Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, China, and is committed to the teaching and research and development of industrial design products. I was interested in the development of industrial design in the middle school. Yes, very lucky to be an industrial product designer。
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts product design professional [industrial design professional direction] was established in 1979 is the earliest institutions of higher learning in the establishment of the professional one of the institutions。
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I like the design integration and intelligence under the product design and development.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I like most like the design with green energy and public awareness.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
During my college design work: three-dimensional composition unit class works, was adopted by the Dalian municipal government for the theme of sculpture.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
My favorite material is bamboo and wood, the platform is the exchange of teaching and practice platform, technology is "3D printing technology."
When do you feel the most creative?
I think the most creative is the design inspiration captured the moment.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I think the design can be more concerned by the community and people, is the main focus in the design.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
When I design the product, the emotional burst, bring the design to meet.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
When I enjoy the joy of my design results, fun to drink, the United States and the United States to sleep.
What makes a design successful?
I think it is the daily accumulation of industrial design thinking and practice.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
2015 China "Twelfth National Art Exhibition" in Xi'an. I would like to hold an exhibition with Chinese influential related product designers for nearly three years.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My design works from the daily work, the accumulation of life. My creative design and design practice in the gradual promotion of the relevant manufacturers to promote the concern. My inspiration comes from the cumbersome operation of everyday drinks.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My design style is in the most simple form. Because my daily work, life touched positioning in this style, my design style is in the simple design to maximize the use of people.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in the northeast of China, Shenyang, Shenyang, northeast of the political, economic and cultural center. China is the four ancient civilizations, so China's history and heritage has always affected my design ideas. The advantage is the delicate cultural heritage, lifestyle is our driving force to find design inspiration; the disadvantage is in the design innovation and the West there is a certain gap.
How do you work with companies?
I usually through the "production and research" teaching background and business cooperation.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
I think the relative lack of enterprise designers more delicate and original product development. Companies usually choose from 2 to 3 years in the same industry experience in the excellent designer.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I find through the daily life touch point, produce design ideas, and design team to study the design direction, until the product design is completed.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
In my graduate period, he collected the production of gypsum material three-dimensional design works.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I am in the working hours part of the time to complete the daily undergraduate, graduate teaching, the rest of the experimental teaching center to do related product development and practice.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
I think as a qualified designer, the most important thing is to be keen on the dedication of industrial design, to work in daily life, good at capturing inspiration, looking for product deficiencies, find the problem.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
I think the enthusiasm and dedication to the field of industrial design is a major factor in the positive and negative factors of the designer.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
I think for product design in the "golden rule" is the product form of research and use, in line with the law of the law of the United States.
What skills are most important for a designer?
I think the most important skill of the designer is to create the ability.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
My tool is mainly drawing pencil, marker pen. The toolbox has a variety of tools and related books for drawing renderings.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
When I encounter relatively interesting and promising design work, in addition to taking up daily working hours, will be more use of evening time and Saturday, Sunday holiday time to study.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
I think it is the product development process of the various technical limitations.
What was your most important job experience?
My most important work experience is in the university daily teaching and business cooperation, the "teaching and practice", with the enterprise project for the design of teaching.
Who are some of your clients?
My client is the main work of undergraduate and graduate students in the daily teaching, at the same time with the region some related enterprises to carry out teaching and practice research.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I like the most relevant integrated, intelligent design works, because this is the future of the most concerned about the direction of society.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I will be implementation of the "production and research" to promote in the future. Through the teaching platform more and well-known enterprises to carry out extensive cooperation.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
We are conducting a research and development on the "VR interactive game".

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I think the good designer is designing the best design work while the great designer is designed to improve the user's life. The focus will be different.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I think the first is the design of the product can be accepted by social groups. Products can do the greatest convenience, simple and ecological is a good design.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
I most like the design with green energy and public awareness. Because this design is easier to achieve the maximum convenience, simplicity, and ecology.
What is your day to day look like?
I like to design small products, because small products will be closer to people's daily life. The usage rate will be higher and the product update will be faster.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I think in my future I need to study the "virtual reality" technology .
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
I think the future of the design is everyone's own favorite products, to achieve tailor-made personality requirements.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Steve Jobs. He pushed the design to the height of the culture.
What is your biggest design work?
Apple designs products. Apple's simple styling and practical features are examples of contemporary design.
