Interview with Karolis Bakunas - Form2be

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I started painting at local school of arts when I was 8 years old. Later, in teenager years I started making various models, houses from paper. and wood. At age 17 I started attending product design courses in Vilnius Academy of Arts. Later I became student there. Since then think and live as a designer.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I work in "Entech Group" It is a Lithuanian industrial design and engineering company. Team has rich experience in the development of new industrial products. Professionals have expertise in a variety of fields. Development of a new concept, appearance of a product involves cooperation with engineers, technologists, production equipment manufacturers and product assemblers. Company can produce the most suitable and attractive design for simple home electronics and industrial equipment.
What is "design" for you?
Design takes a very important role for me in my life. Design is a process of creation when you are responsible for entire new object. It's commercial success is up to design, if the design is good the product will be successful. Good design is honest and understandable until the last detail.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Audio devices: speakers, turntables, amplifiers. Also other electronic devices, computers, home appliances.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
My favorite design is “Reed precision” turntable. I think it is one of the greatest designs I made so far. It's unique technical solutions combines with its luxurious style and at the same time its is minimal and simple turntable. That's the reason, why I like it very much.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
First design I have made for company was finger print scanner. It has touch screen, finger print scanner and door card reading sensor. The aim of design was to built modern looking device witch fits all modern interiors.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
My favorite material is metal. I used it as décor element or sometimes make entire object of that. I like when stainless steel or aluminium combines with wood or plastic.
When do you feel the most creative?
I fell the most creative after visiting galleries, design exhibitions or after exploring good design examples and after having a good rest
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Aesthetics and functionality of device. Of course, ergonomics is also very important.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I feel like I can show very best at particular object design and I always feel inspiration when I design. Designing objects lets me fulfill my ideas and thoughts. I feel like I'm full of energy when I'm designing.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Then I fell some kind of satisfaction, when I realize that many people will use the object that I created. Feeling like this inspires me to create more, to do more good designs.
What makes a design successful?
Successful design is aesthetic till the last detail. It must be innovative, honest and user friendly. Good design has clear shape and is understandable.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designer shapes the product tendencies, sometimes good design can change attitude to some kind of products, they can became more or less popular. Designer decisions are very important, because they can even determinate our behavior sometimes.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design is evolving fast. Design will shape our future, trends and life style. Design is becoming inherent part of our life.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I analyse what is designed before, I think it is very important. I go to exhibitions and find inspiration here. Sometimes inspiration comes after sketching or drawing particular object.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I consider that my design style is more minimal. Finding reasonable shapes and minimal style is always my way to design objects. Simple shapes, clear lines and nothing unnecessary-that is my style. Good design examples like Dieter Rams with "Braun", David Lewis from "Bang&Olufsen" and "Apple" design inspires me the most.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I always explore what is done before, it is very important. Then I'm tying to apply innovative solutions, it could be new function, new material or design solution. Then I make many sketches, 3d models and renderings. Very often I consult with colleagues, engineers and step by step the final design is being made.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
It is very important to have discussions with engineers, inventors and other designers. Also visiting exhibitions and attending various seminars is important.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Never add unnecessary things to objects, never add something that is worthless. Pure vision, pure shape.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Mostly I enjoy designing audio equipment like speakers, amplifiers, turntables, but sometime I make various electronic devices. Hi-fi is my passion, I'm absolute audio enthusiast.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
When working with company “Entech Group” we work as a team, I'm lead designer there. Sometimes I work alone with my personal projects as a professional

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I graduated Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2013 and got product design bachelor degree and in 2015 I finished product design master studies in same university.
How did you become a designer?
The main motive is that I fell like I can make a good design, I can do better than others and I can give something to society and people.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I chose to became a designer many years ago. At the age 17 I started to attend Vilnius Academy of Arts design courses, I knew that it was right decision.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Most of design I make are electronic devices and industrial equipment, but I would love to design more audio devices like speakers, turntables and etc.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
They have to practice a lot with sketching and modelling. Of course its very important to have a good background, education, they must have “sense of shape” and critical thinking.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Good design is honest and pure till the last detail. Good design is aesthetic, without anything that could complicate it. Good design is iconic, and it is not always good to create trendy design, because trends are changing fast, if you wish to design be timeless you must be careful with trends.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Good design is very important to all products. Design can make product very successful, otherwise bad design can completely destroy it. Design can make particular products iconic, very popular that everyone would love to have.
What is your day to day look like?
I would design high-end audio equipment. I would love to create turntable or speakers.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Turntable is my dream object, I have started but not finished yet.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
David Lewis from Bang&Olufsen, Dieter Rams with Braun, Jonathan Ive from Apple.
What is your biggest design work?
One of my favourite designs are Beolab 5 speaker and cd player Beosound 9000 from Bang&Olufsen. They are absolutely innovative, not ordinary looking and unique in design and working principle.
Who is your favourite designer?
My greatest design is “Reed precision” turntable. It is simple in shape, but rich in innovative solutions. It's minimalistic design combines with luxury style and materials used.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Design is a combination that consists of of creative attitude, critical thinking and sense aesthetics and shape.

My family and colleagues from company Entech Goup are my best supporters.
