Interview with Miguel Ángel Sánchez Martín

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I was born among the chip, my father had a carpenter and little by little the company was growing in the carpentry and furniture sector, my interest in innovating in the sector led me to study interior design and specialize in product design and furniture.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
It is a small studio where we develop projects of interior design, ephemeral constructions and product design, one of our advantages is to have as support a family furniture factory with which we facilitate our creations and work with carpenters, cabinetmakers, upholsterers, etc ...
What is "design" for you?
It is my way of transmitting to others the way I see and feel the world.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
The design of product and furniture, for its constructive processes and the development thereof.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Noble materials, such as wood and stone, regarding technological materials we are always in contact with platforms such as MATERIAL and Material connection.
When do you feel the most creative?
In the moments and situations less expected, when I have relaxed my mind and, suddenly, everything flows.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
The functionality and timelessness, as well as the quality and durability of the materials.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
All. Each design conveys a different emotion at each point in its creation process. Illusion, enthusiasm, frustration, anger, sadness, joy, overwhelm, calm ... depending on where I am I feel one way or another. Although the final emotion is always the same: happiness for effort and work well done.
What makes a design successful?
What is original and innovative. Of course, as I said before, I think it is essential that a design is functional and timeless, not a fad, and that its materials and finishes ensure a long life.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
To make the life of the people more functional and comfortable, with respect to the environment, to keep on constant search and development of materials that have low environmental impact.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
As in many other aspects of the world and society, design evolves from the hand of technology. In the very near future (not to say that we are already living) will be two concepts inseparable.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
I collaborate as a teacher in design centers and university where I teach materials and furniture classes where I show some of my projects and products.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
The current needs of society and the evolution of spaces, combining it with the latest trends and artistic movements, inspired by the greatest of yesterday and today.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Spain. Of course it affects. The culture and customs, the economy, politics ... all this ends up affecting the designs in both their form and the materials used. The pros, the climate, the traditions and the joy of living Spanish, that make the designs are as cheerful and spontaneous as their society, designed to enjoy and making any time of year is a good excuse to create something new. The cons, the lack of awareness with the design and the little value that is given in many occasions, that limit us both economically and creatively.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Constancy, effort and passion. One does not have to wait until the inspiration arrives by magic, or to think that the creativity and the art is only a value with which a few are born. We all have an "artist" inside, but we have to find it and grow it based on work and effort. Pursue a goal and do not let go.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Positive, that allows you to realize dreams and ideas that are in your mind, transmit it to others through the tools that you have as a designer. Every day is a new story and there is no routine as marked as in other works. Negative, you never stop working. The mind is always working and scheming new things. It is impossible to close the study door and disconnect. The study is in your head.
What skills are most important for a designer?
The ability to graphically transmit your ideas to others and to be able to materialize them, to bring to reality abstract ideas or concepts.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Pencil and paper. Those are the main tools. In addition, we always use books, magazines, catalogs, samples of materials ... everything that can inspire us when facing a new project. Remains of materials, paper, cardboard, wood ... to be able to "play" making models and prototypes and giving shape to our ideas. And, of course, a computer, with internet and all the necessary design programs.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Well, the important thing is never to think that you have wasted it. There are projects that go out alone, and others that seem to never see the light. In the end some compensate the others and you realize that often the important thing is not the result, but the process and all the things that you have learned during the same. Sometimes it is necessary to put limits, of course, there is a budget and delivery times. In such cases you have to be practical and have a well-structured calendar.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends. No object is the same as another. Depending on its complexity may be a week or a few months. There are even objects that are the result of years of maturation.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
The most frequent question might be: "But you really, what do you do?"

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
It is not just about aesthetics, it is about making something work, that it is useful and that it is a positive change for the people who use it and enjoy it. In the end, a good design will make your life better, smaller or larger scale.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
It is a way of life, ends impregnated in everything that surrounds you.
