Interview with Chien Hwa Huang

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
When I was in elementary school, I liked painting and ceramic art. When I was in senior high school, I studied art. But I was studying management course in university. After I started working, I worked as a salesperson. After a few years, I was always passionate about design. Started self-study, through many observations and learning, gradually moving toward design.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
The HC team has extensive experience in architectural and interior design. We are a professional team that values innovation and change to create vital living spaces for people. We provide integrated services that cover planning, design, construction, and consultant. We manage constructions under strict quality control, insist on using safe and green materials, and take every client’s project as a piece of artwork.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
I like a variety of different types of design, such as non-linear design, natural line design, and many other designs. I am very interested.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Various materials and technologies have different characteristics. How to use them skillfully is the key. Technology is also the same.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Sometimes tension, sometimes irritating, sometimes happiness and sometimes feel down.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
That is a very good thing. The future of design should be diversified.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My last exhibition was in Beijing in November 2017.I hope the next exhibition comes very soon.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My design inspiration comes from life, sometimes traveling, sometimes attending concerts, sometimes looking at art exhibitions, or even attending fashion shows.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
In fact, I don't have a specific style. It's a new start for every case.We believe that if you define your own design style, it will also mean that the development of the design is limited.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Taiwan. Because of the history, Taiwan was ruled by several different countries. It also left some historic sites and different cultures. This time the project is a building that has been preserved because of history, so I have the opportunity to build it and renovate it.However, in the process, it is still bound by laws and regulations, so it cannot be fully designed.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Companies often choose designers who can afford their work.Only responsible people can complete their work.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Usually we will understand and listen to the needs of our customers first, and then use our expertise to analyze whether they are applicable. If not, we will find more feasible solutions for them and make appropriate recommendations. After all, the users are the masters of space.
Can you describe a day in your life?
After getting up in the morning like a butterfly flying around, noon like a pig, keep eating, the afternoon like a horse, running gracefully, sometimes stopping to rest, at night like a cow, slowly eating.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Study hard, don't give up easily, accumulate experience and technology. When the time comes, everything will belong to you.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
I don't like to say negative things. Usually I only face design and life with a positive attitude.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
We usually use SketchUp in the design. He can quickly express the sense of space, let us quickly understand the appropriateness, in addition, in the part of the architectural design is the use of BIM-related software.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Managing time is actually a difficult task. If you set up a work plan at the beginning, you may be able to do it.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
There is no standard answer, depending on the size and complexity of the project.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
What is your demand, what is your budget, and how long time can you wait?
What was your most important job experience?
I used to be a salesperson, and I think that's why I know how to listen to the user's needs.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I am interested in every kind of different design work because I can have different experiences.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
We have to do very many types of projects in the future. Of course, we do not want to be confined in Taiwan. We will seek the path to international development and we will try to do so. We hope to design architectural works and interiors that belong to our philosophy.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
We wish that one day we can design a city, whether it be street appearances, transportation facilities, commercial, hotels, office buildings or residential buildings, including building facades, interior design, furniture design, and furniture layout, all through our design philosophy.Fortunately, we are currently working on a design project for a small hotel that will be completed within two years.
How can people contact you?
My Web site: http://www.hcdesign.com.twMy email: princehuang1221@gmail.com
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
This case has won many awards for us. There are also many media reports. The customers are very satisfied. But what we care about is not that. What we care is the place that we designed can touch people or not?Of course, we will work harder.

Designer of the Day Interview with Chien Hwa Huang

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I have been in the design industry for 13 years. The customers in each case are good customers and represent mutual trust.I learned design from practical work, not from school.
How did you become a designer?
When I was in elementary school, I liked painting and ceramic art. When I was in senior high school, I studied art. But I was studying management course in university. After I started working, I worked as a salesperson. After a few years, I was always passionate about design. Started self-study, through many observations and learning, gradually moving toward design.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
We usually for people's needs first. Space style is not what we care about most. I think the order is space setting, style setting, then color matching. When we are doing design, we often need to work with 3D graphics software and production models so that client can understand it and let us explain it more easily.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I am always very excited when designing.I am very interested in creating things. It makes me happy, because I was passionate about design.Every new breakthrough will satisfy me.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
My design background is related to my growth, but it has nothing to do with my study. My father was once the owner of a construction company. So I was surrounded by many architects from childhood, and I am very interested in creating things. It makes me happy.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I just want to be myself.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
The first is that you must be passionate about design. And you must be bold to try. Even a failure is a wonderful experience.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
For us, we have been doing different experiments and innovations, bravely facing new challenges, and getting experience from each completed case. The design does not need to be conservative, and some people who always insists that the design must have thread of thought. Man~I think it is the killer of creativity.
What is your day to day look like?
Every day is a new beginning. I will pay attention to other people's new design cases. And will pay attention to new things from the news, can walk around in more free time, looking for new inspiration.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
This problem has no correct answer for me. The trend is that when a group of people all share the same ideas and go in that direction, he becomes a trend. As mentioned before, the projects we are doing are very diverse. Never set a trend to pursue trends.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
This is a big question. I can only say that when it feels right, it is ready. But design is hardly perfect. It can only be the best of the moment.Of course, we will prepare for the adjustment of details. As for success, it depends on the market's response.
What is your biggest design work?
My current biggest design is an art museum and its surrounding facilities. Although it has not been achieved, in this program, we thoroughly apply what we know and learn, whether in the design of the landscape or the surrounding environment. Or, the series connection between multiple venues, the architectural design of the home view, the design of the interior space, the planning of the moving line, I think we have all made the best interpretation.
Who is your favourite designer?
Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Antoni Gaudí I would most like to talk to Antoni Gaudi, but he is pass.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
There are many wonderful cities in the world. Perhaps it should be said that every city has its charming qualities. If you must choose, the city that has so far impressed me so far is Barcelona. It is a city full of art and beauty. There are also many artists and architects. For me, besides taking a look at the merits of others' interior design works, I went to see the great buildings in person all over the world and contacted many things about art.such as visiting museums, listen concerts, and to know fashion industry. Sometimes to participate in fashion parties, so that you can understand more in many ways, and trigger design inspiration.Design is a way to make things better, make the space more beautiful, use more convenient, and bring people a better experience. For me, design is life!
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
In our group, we always had new design teams to join and work together. We can generate fire and churn out better ideas. In the future, we also hope that more types of people will join us.I think that the enthusiasm for design and the spirit of not giving up is very important as a good designer or artist.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
In our previous project, we successfully transformed the ruins into a popular place, and driven the development of the surrounding areas, both environmentally and economically. One of the projects we are working on is the restoration of monuments. It is a landmark in the city. In this project, we do not consider profit, but only for cultural and historical preservation.I know that in this world, there are artists, architects, and others who contribute to humanitarianism. It's a great thing. If there are opportunities, we are willing to join and contribute.
