In addition, he had the honor in representing Macau and winning numerous regional and national awards in multimedia design. In 2015, Ben started CLIFFS STUDIO, he and his team offer a variety of fresh, innovative and bold design ideas to customers, their design work shows creativity which often surpass customer expectations.

Interview with Ben Cheong

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I had been studying design and animation since secondary school and I graduated from the Department of Multimedia Design at Macao Polytechnic Institute. I was hired by a local media company while I was still in college and I had the honor in representing Macau and winning numerous regional and national awards in 3D animation design. I went to a 3D amination course when I was in secondary school, all my classmates were designers and they influenced me a lot. I started to love design and choose it as my career since then.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CLIFFS STUDIO was founded in 2015. It is a multimedia production company that specializes in 3D animation. We are dedicated to create quality video productions images with innovative and bold attitudes. We have participated in various projects including brand advertising, post-production, hologram, projection mapping, 3D printing and so on. Our team members have participated in numerous regional and national competitions of 3D animation design on behalf of Macau and have achieved remarkable results.
What is "design" for you?
Design is a kind of customer service. By listening and understanding our clients' needs, we provide complete and customized solutions. As a result, our design creates the greatest value to our clients' business.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Motion Graphic and AnimationMotion Graphic is a kind of animation. It can be formed by 2D or 3D, usually matching the rhythm of music. An excellent work comes from outstanding design sense and perfect color scheme. 3D animation is generated by a chain of pictures which played in a certain speed to create optical illusion so we are able to see the movement of still images.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
3D Modeling of Casino building, including The Venetian Macau, Sands Cotai Central, Studio City, City of dreams, etc.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I feel distressed when I design because I need to think about a unique idea in a new design.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
It is necessary to design projects that can help to make the world a better place, such as eco-friendly, disadvantaged and disabled projects.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design will be treasured more and more as the life condition become better, people’s demand to “beauty” will be higher.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
I had exhibited my work in Shenzhen, and I hope I will have a chance to show my works again this year.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I check out Behance, Pinterest and Vimeo everyday, where I can find most of the inspirations. They can also be collected and reviewed when there’s a need.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Macau. I feel cultural heritage has influenced my design a lot. Different places have different cultural backgrounds. I think the con is my knowledge is not wide enough, so I need to go aboard to experience different culture and customs so as to enrich myself.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
If the companies can respect the specialty of designers and give them more rooms to create, I believe the design can be more interesting. Besides, companies should choose the designers basic on their potential, and make progress together.

Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
They will benefit from watching Behance, Pinterest, Vimeo, where they can find good works and tons of inspirations.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Though Design is really a tough job, if you can manage it, you can even change the world.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Excellent concept, broad vision, vivid color sense, interesting expression.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
We will spend most of our time on meeting and discussion. We prefer figure out how to execute in the most efficient way with the best result, instead of thinking by doing.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Motion Graphic, as it is always very interesting, not time consuming and easy to get a sense of accomplishment.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I aim to get more awards in future and get to know more people over the world.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
A 3D animation project, which is really a tough work. I’ve spent almost a year to revise the story and it also costed me a lot.

Designer of the Day Interview with Ben Cheong

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I had nine-year experience in animation production, and I had been studying design and animation by self-study since secondary school. Furthermore, I was hired by a local media company while I was still in college. I focused on my study while working at the media company. I graduated from the Department of Multimedia Design at Macao Polytechnic Institute. In addition, I had the honor to represent Macau and win numerous regional and national awards in multimedia design.
How did you become a designer?
The Storm Rider-a comic/TV drama from Hong Kong had made me become a designer, because I like the Chinese martial art with VFX(Computer Graphic) in this TV drama when I was 13 years old. I joined some 3D courses and competitions after I finished The Storm Rider. Finally, I met a group of design friends and completed my design education.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I will normally put aesthetic and concept in the first place, then search for different style of works on internet as reference and choose the most suitable technique for the project.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I think we need go through the process of vexation in order to create a good design. The most exciting part is when your work has been accomplished, it is like watching your baby’s birth. And when my clients admire my works, I will feel successful as I have solved their problem.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
In future I would like to create an animation about Chinese martial heroes(Wuxia). I had watched a Wuxia TV series and its special effects totally dragged me into the world of 3D. This is why I am engaged in the industry of multimedia. And That is also one of my life targets.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
They need to have endless persistence and efforts. Don’t just be satisfied with going to school every day. On the road to success, there is no room for playing or doing anything else except practising, even you are a genius.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
What I will always suggest is to work hard. Nowadays, there are too many people complaining about slim chance to be successful, however, they never think about whether they are ready for the opportunity.
What is your day to day look like?
I browse Behance and Vimeo in the morning, to check if there’s any new works and make sure I can keep up with the trends of design. After that I will start my routine.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Usually I find the latest information and inspiration from Behance and Vimeo and follow some excellent designer so as to make sure I can keep up with the trends.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
A good design can inspire people or help to solve problems, moreover, aesthetic and colour are both important elements of design.
Who is your favourite designer?
Zhelong Xu. He is a 3D sculptor from China and well-known in the world. His works are unique and distinctive.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Yes, one of our responsibilities is to contribute to our society. We had ever created an animation for promotion for Orbis and received good responses.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
Awareness and affirmation to myself, let more potential clients get to know us.

How did you become a designer?
I believe designer can change the world. If Steve Jobs didn’t create iPhone, we were still using traditional cell phone.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
In fact, I don’t see myself a design legend as I am still learning in the world of design. I think young designers should work harder than others to achieve more since there are lots of people doing better than you.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A good designer can influence people, a great designer can change the world.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
A good design can improve the way of life, facilitate our living and make the world a better place to live.
What is your day to day look like?
I always think about the social problems and record the stories. I hope I can use them create some thought-provoking animations in future.
What is your biggest design work?
SOMEI, as his works had influenced the whole advertisement of mobile phone. Nowadays most of the advertisements have its shadow. And it is because of him I have strong interest in Motion Graphic.
Who is your favourite designer?
Darkness to go 2017, The concept, color and animation make me feel great。
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Design is a kind of customer service. By listening and understanding our clients' needs, we provide complete and customized solutions. As a result, our design creates the greatest value to our clients' business.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
