Interview with Guangzhou Seedland Real Estate Development Co., Ltd. 37 Degree Smart Home

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I am a designer of science background and graduated from the Industrial Design Department of Central South University. To become a designer, or to apply for this profession, I just felt that designing was a cool thing. Designers should all be a group of interesting people. I want to be such a person.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
37° Smart Home is a young company that has just started business. We want to give users a smart home with humanistic care. Our company is committed to influencing and enhancing people's daily home life. All are through the intelligent upgrade of traditional furniture, so that people's everyday family scene becomes more convenient, safe and healthy.
What is "design" for you?
My design follows the principle of moderateness and solves practical problems in a concise form. This is my way of design.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I like all the works that have been given the designer's expectations.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first design I designed for the company is this gold medal work.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I prefer plain water concrete and natural wood. Like 3D printing technology, let the design appear immediately, experience, and then improve.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I am more concerned with whether the design works effectively to solve the problem.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
I was born in a huge market and the market has a strong demand for design. So my design will often get mass production. At the beginning, I will feel excited, but later, I will be more concerned about its sales. I think that letting users use money to express their favorite designs is a good design I think.
What makes a design successful?
Respect for the traditional, the grasp of modern trends and understanding and care for people.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
User experience, balance between cost and function, inspiration for other designers, etc.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Design should really solve the problems in life, especially for the design of mass production. To make effective design implementation is to reduce waste.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Our country pays more and more attention to truly good design. Everyone also realizes that design can generate value.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Inspiration comes mainly from the observation of life. Designers must have a curiosity. This is a source of inspiration and a source of happiness.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I come from China. Our country has a profound cultural heritage, which affect my design. I have pursued that it is precisely what the ancient great man Confucius described as the “Golden Mean”. The golden mean does not mean mediocrity, but it is just right! Every design has a most suitable point, and I just try to reach it.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Not too special. There is a need to say that it may be to find the points that need to be designed in the early days. I will spend more manpower and time to do it. That is what I often say, what are the problems that need to be solved? Design is the process of solving problems. If you can't even find the problem, how do you design it?
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
You want to be as curious about everything in the product as a child, and to find out exactly how it was made. Think about why designers who designed this thing must be designed in such a way. What these small details are all about, and how the process is implemented. All things asked why and careful observation is an occupational disease that a designer should have.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
As a designer, it is also a person first, so you must first be a good person. I usually study with Confucius. The other thing is to learn from my children. There are things that we forget when we grow up, but they are still there.
What skills are most important for a designer?
I think imagination is the most important thing. You must be able to speak or express your ideas. In this case, the idea can be sublimated with the opinions of others.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Manage with a list. Details can be seen in a book called the List Revolution.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
I usually ask less, read more, think more. Sometimes I read it for a long time.
What was your most important job experience?
That should be the years of work in the Midea. In that company, my leadership was not a professional designer and she was responsible for product planning. Most of her time she was strict, but it made me think of standing in the planning position to think about product design.
