About Revano Satria

Born in Indonesia, Revano has been highly recognized for his entrepreneurial achievements; founding numerous independent and highly successful firms that have provided services for all stages of the design process, from design and construction, down to the minute details of furniture design and fabrication. Revano received his Bachelor Degree in architecture from Parahyangan University in Indonesia followed by a Master of Architecture in the field of Emergent Technologies and Design at the Architectural Association in London, where his pioneering research throughout his post-graduate studies allowed him to serve as a consultant for Buro Happold in London on the Cairo Expo City project in Egypt (designed by Zaha Hadid Archtects). Revano’s highly distinguished career has been cemented with an extensive number of national and international awards, three of which; The Best of The Best, The Excellent Design and Favorite Design, - awarded by the Indonesian Architectural Association - were presented to him during his time in academia. However, his most prized possession was for his achievement in winning 1st place in his first International Competition for the development of Bangka Waterfront City in Indonesia. More importantly however, Revano ensures that he gives back to the architectural community, holding countless conferences and seminars lecturing to students and professionals alike on the progressive practices of architectural design and how their application is meant to serve all aspects of human life, ensuring his research serves more than just the end user.

Interview with Revano Satria

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I was graduated from AA School of Architecture London, UK in 2010 with a Master Degree in Emergent Technologies and Design. I never wanted to be a designer at the beginning. All my life, i always fascinated about the idea of what will happened next and what lies ahead in the future. Computer Science comes naturally as my point of interest, but architecture is something that i knew i can be good at. So it was not my first choice, it was the only thing at that time that i suited me the most.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
MSSM Associates is an award-winning internationally progressive interdisciplinary design office with branches located in Cyprus, Indonesia, Lebanon and the UK.Founded by four post-graduate students at the Architectural Association in London, MSSM Associates manifested into an innovative, multinational collaboration. The founders, Michel Moukarzel, Mohammed Makki, Revano Satria and Pavlos Schizas pride themselves in applying the most dynamic and innovative emergent technologies in all aspects of their designs, a modus operandi that has secured the team multiple international awards, and whose work and research has been published and presented in numerous international journals and conferences across a multitude of different platforms and institutions. The team has been founded on the belief that nature is the ultimate inspiration for design; regardless of scale, the application of the laws that govern natural systems has proven instrumental in MSSM Associate’s unique and innovative multidisciplinary design solutions. An aspiration that the team endeavors to achieve without fail.Working in constant unison with professionals of multiple disciplines allows MSSM Associates to comprehensively and efficiently transcribe concept to reality, providing solutions to a spectrum of challenges that range in form, application, function and scale.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Apple products like iPhone and Macbook. I always fascinated by the term of total design. Where everything fits perfectly into each other without people even noticing at beginning. I was blown away by the beautiful engineering the design team at Apple does inside of their products. People might not see it, but it's the beauty of Total Design
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Geometry. I believe that the beauty of the geometry will represent and act as the visual representation of my thinking. That level of detail would have made a deep impression on the few people that would have seen the inner structure.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
I analyse than inspired.I am not creative, everything is just connecting point for mePeople's life
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
- Silent killer- I like when the design looks so simple yet it's so complicated to do- Design is not a linear process. It's a loop process.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
- Indonesia- No- Pro : everything is cheaper, cons : you have to know everything by yourself to make your design a reality
How do you work with companies?
- Generally good, i always more to a strategist than a designer. It helps me to understand the way company want to run their business
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
- Choose the one who got the same vision with your company. If you managed to find one, shut up and let them work. Trust them.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
I always start with finding the grandest picture of the circumstances before talking about the detail
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Eames Lounge ChairiPhoneMacbook ProPorschePhillipe Starck Dining Chair
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
+ : No one can dictate your life- : You are just a small part of the grand design
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I tend to cut all those time consuming task by thinking instead of doing something.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
