Jingwen Zhang is an accessory designer who believes all design ideas would come from real life. She was born and raised in Shanghai, China. After she figures out her true calling in accessory design, she comes to the United States for further study and starts her career. She's a designer who is brave to do a lot of new creations and experiment on new materials. People can see a lot of different material combination in her accessory design pieces.

Interview with Jingwen Zhang

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I grew up in Shanghai, China before arriving in America in 2014 to study Accessory Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I am currently seeking a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree and is expected to graduate in the spring of 2018. I earned her bachelor degree in Industrial Design at Donghua University. During the learning of accessories design, I realized that my true calling was accessory design because the discipline combines fashion, function, and creativity.
What is "design" for you?
I believe in a good design is the product which could benefit people in their lives.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I prefer to design handbags and footwear for the most of the time.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I quite like to experiment with all kinds of different materials.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
A designer has responsibilities in providing the design which could both benefits people and with ecosystem ideas to protect the environment.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
In Savannah, Georgia. I am planning to hold my next exhibition during the summer in New York.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Most of my design is about appealing peoples mind in taking care of their emotions. I feed my creativities and souring inspirations by gaining the market needs.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Currently, I live in Georgia, USA. Actually, I think my design is with a global lens since I have experience in lived and studied in different countries and culture.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
The companies would be good to provide more allowance for a designer to design their ideas. And a good designer would be with modern ideas and keep up with trends.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Feel free to spread the ideas and being creative. Just do what you would like and could imagine. It’s all about experiment.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I usually gaining my ideas from life. So I would go for walk to exploring ideas.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
My career goal is trying to be a accessories designer for the luxury brand in the future.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Currently, I develop my designs by myself. But I am also good at work in a team.

I've started to learning art since I was young. And I got the professional study since 2010.
How did you become a designer?
My undergraduate university is quite famous for fashion design. In our industrial design department, we get to includes the accessories design. During the learning of accessories design, I realized that my true calling was accessory design because the discipline combines fashion, function, and creativity.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
With the recognization of my true calling in accessory design, the goal of bringing in special, eye-catch design for accessories as the discipline combines fashion, function, and creativity. My project is focusing on the deep exploration of the soul's needs for the human being, which is also an important expression of my concern for people mental health in a positive way.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I would feel well accomplished after I finished each project. The design is a long-term journey. As a designer, I have the responsibility for doing the design, pattern making and producing. The process of discovering and exploring the new technology is quite exciting for the designer.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I started to learn art since I was a child. The knowledge and learning of art in both dance and drawing field, these help me to develop my interests and skills in the fields.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
I was born and raised in Shanghai, China. After I got the bachelor degree, I came to American to get the learning in master degree and accomplish my dream. My desire job is being a design director for a high- end top luxury brand.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Feel free to spread out your ideas and imaginations. Since you were young, you can be a design master in the future. Just believing in yourself!
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Believing in yourself and never being afraid to do the special design. As long as it is useful or fashionable, it would like by someone.
What is your day to day look like?
I would describe it as hustle and bustle as busy as a bee every day.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I would go to some professional trend website to search and learn about the latest trend. Sometimes, I would also go to stores to get the most trendy elements.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
The respond and suggestions from the consumers and market are the most important to me. A good design I feel like it would make people’s life easier and beneficial’s them.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
It's hard to tell if a design is ready. I feel like it's more depends on the designer. With the trends rapidly changes, the design would need updates on trends, while how does a design could be long-last is something that the designers need to consider.
What is your biggest design work?
My biggest design work is my Comfort collection. It's really quite minimalist, with a pure look and functional.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
As my background, I have the experience of both living in Asian and American. My design usually comes with a global lens and vary by culture.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

I am able to get more knowledge and communication with other designers, get into the commute of professional designers and being more clearly for my ideal career plan.

I plan to design a collection which fits the high fashion market needs.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I have couples new design which needs the equipment and time for realizing. Those are all in my schedule for producing.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Most of my design is conceptual, the special outlook of it which could attract people’s attention. However, it also able to provide the functionality for people to really use it in their lives.
What is your biggest design work?
Boyy bag is also one of my favorite items now. Since it’s fashionable and also classic which could fit a lot different occasion.
Who is your favourite designer?
The comfort coat which could transform into a bag. It looks modern, comfortable to wear and useful.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Actually, I’ve also learned about jewelry design and fashion design which I believe those skills would help me a lot in accessories design process for the pattern making and hardware design parts.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Dancer. I impacted a lot of form art starting from my childhood.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
The design is something which would make people’s life easier and with higher quality.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
My parents are my biggest supporter. With all their encourages and support that I could come abroad and realize my dream.
