Interview with Lo, Ron

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
The reason that I become a designer because I feel things, read stories, create stories. Exploring the feeling of emotion, sensation, conscious. Finding the stories beyond the object, people, connection. Creating the stories of the object, relation. If I'm not a designer, I might be a movie director, writer, filmmaker.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I'm the designer himself and I cooperate with Medium2studio. We dedicate ourselves to searching the sensation of the language of design.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
The furniture, it's the most important objects to people. Except for the whole electronic products, what do we have?. The furniture.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
In this contemporary era, I select "Serif TV". Most of the electronic brands are pursuing make an ultra flat one. But the Bouroullec brothers gave it a new language of TV. The TV likes go back to 19 century which has a standard, could put something above it. The form doesn't look like electronic products, it is more like a furniture at home. To me, this is an impressive design for me.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
A public recycles trash bin. The case is started by Taipei City Government which need to solve an environmental problem of "One-time usage beverage cup". The main goals is designed systematic solutions for recycling beverage cups though industrial design solution.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I love the platform of acadamic and business forum, those always brings some new vision of design.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
The feeling, how do people feel the design and what do they feel.
What makes a design successful?
A design which could balance the business, social awareness, design style, usability, environment-friendly
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
As a methodology, in the future, many people will get involved in the design field. For an architect, designer, an artist still needs to learn the aesthetic, history of arts and design, Human science. For nontraditional design people, the design means not only make thing functional, beautiful, logical. The design will be a methodology to explore their mind as a tool which helps people brainstorming, reviewing the results. Then, if people still love to get into the traditional design filed they still need to take the process to know aesthetic, history of arts and design, Human science.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
The last exhibition was held in 2016 in the old town of Taipei city.If I find the producer or brand to cooperate with, the next exhibition I hope could be held in 2020. Because the design needs times to deal with the cooperator.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My inspiration is following by feeling. It might be an extraordinary landscape, a part of a relationship, a sense of emotion, a paragraph of books, new perspective of technologies.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
It's hard to justify my design style by myself. I love the objects which creates an elegant, tranquil atmosphere, therefore dedicate myself to make objects in a peaceful, calm characteristic.But if I design conceptual design, I make the design become more vivid, full fill with emotion, experimental.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Taiwan which has the variety of culture. Taiwan has the multiple cultural heritage of Chinese, Japanese, Netherland, aboriginal. Besides many cities are transforming fiercely from traditional to modern, from local to international. Therefore, the place where I live has the energy of living "Changing for the future, Remain the fact of history".
How do you work with companies?
Listen, have a conversation, listen to what they really need, share my perspective and vision, and conversation.Like, treat to your lover.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Guild designers to know more about the companies. Like, find your lover and let him/she know more about yourself.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
1.Conversation.The conversation is the priority to make clear for the client and designer himself.2.Research. The research is the most important thing to explore the view, perspective.3.Prototyping. Prototyping through sketching, making objects, rendering to see the results of the idea and improve it.4. Creating. Find the real thing and create a new story for the design.
Can you describe a day in your life?
A day starts with a cup of tea and a light breakfastA day end at the gym.Between of those, checking the design website for daily updates and grab a magazine or book for inspiration.Then, work with my colleague and friends, discuss our projects and share our new ideas and perspective of design.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
For a designer who would like to start a career. The positive is that you will need to take responsibility for how to run a business. The negatives that you might need to take part in a studio, cooperation first to learn how to run a business. Then integrate those experience and decide which kind of designer you would like to be first, and decide what you want to be in the future.
What skills are most important for a designer?
Feeling, thinking, reflecting.Before you create something, feel, think, reflect the ideas are more important than just making things.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
In this time, the design needs to know that beyond the design what things are also important to you?The family? Healthy status? Exercise? Reading? Learning?. Then, you need to put them into your schedule first, then the rest of the times should be put yourself all into the design case.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
At least 3 months for one conceptual project.At least 1 year for one project.
What was your most important job experience?
Internship, I could dedicate myself to present what capability that I have.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Furniture, because it's the closest object with human life, body.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I prefer to work as a team, I like the feeling like a team and make things better and better together.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Other furniture, electronic product design project which is on the way of trying to explore a different design language to present it.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I born in a traditional, middle-class Taiwanese family. The country is not developing right now, the atmosphere is stressful and filled with depression. I choose to get into design filed because I feel things strongly. At first, I didn't know what is design but I like to find the relationship between objects and human. That how it is started. The education I would talk about Shih Chien University more. It's an experimental design institution. The Industrial department has a different specialty instructor, such as physiologic, sociologic, philosophy and of course with the ID/UI/UX/Mechanism. So, it's an integrated design school to let students explore their mind.
How did you become a designer?
The reason that I become a designer because I feel things, read stories, create stories. Exploring the feeling of emotion, sensation, conscious. Finding the stories beyond the object, people, connection. Creating the stories of the object, relation. If I'm not a designer, I might be a movie director, writer, filmmaker.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Become a designer isn't the most important thing. Be a integrity, decent person is the main purpose. I'm a designer, and I'm not perfect so I put the effort of myself to make design driven by integrity, the decent mindset.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I wish I could create more objects like furniture, living electronic products which are stayed with people but in the silence way.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A good designer has good technique, mindset, vision. A great designer has those things, but it has more social consciousness as a dignity, decent person.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Bestseller products make you become a good designer to make the profit, fame. Make the statement of social consciousness, culture could bring you to the higher level. But forgot those levels or steps first, be a good person first.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Bouroullec brothers, Naoto Fukasawa, Jasper Morrison, Keiji Ashizawa, Tomoko Azumi, Konstantin Grcic, Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby.
What is your biggest design work?
