Interview with Jessika Gouveia

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Ever since I was very young I wanted to be a designer or do something related with Design, I spent most of my days illustrating and testing different techniques of paintings, arts and crafts and I wanted to learn more about composition and art history, but after a few years I found my true passion in Digital Design.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Got It is a start up company in Silicon Valley, we have a small but creative design Team.
When do you feel the most creative?
At crunch times mostly, where there is not much time left before a deadline.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I focus more on the User journey and the best way for them to solve their problem without friction.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Pleased with my work, but I always start to think about new ways to improve that design.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in United States, but I have lived in other countries, as a result I can always use that to my advantage, I have experience with the European, asian and American market.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
First, start with the Mission, the Why? Understand the User Story, be as human-centric as possible. Then start sketching ideas.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Know your design style and own it, don't be afraid to try new techniques, never stop learning and upgrading yourself.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
It's all about planning, resources and organization. I spend my mornings planning for the day and the sprint, making sure all resources and designers are allocated for each project, and include some time for unpredictable last minute events.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Depends on the object, some projects take hours some take days, on Product design we usually take 2 weeks to 1 month per project.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
Can you make the logo bigger, it's a common joke. The most frequent question would be, How can we make this better, getting the user to understand a concept without explaining it to them is always a challenge.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I work as a team, mostly I work on the initial art direction and provide guidance to the team to work on the UI.

Extended Interview with Jessika Gouveia

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I graduated in graphic design in South America. After working as a junior designer, I moved to Europe, where I worked as a web/graphic designer while obtaining my Master's in 3D Animation and Motion Graphics. I kept pushing forward—more and more invaluable experience—and after going managerial I decided to take the ultimate career leap by moving to Asia in 2011. I had a fantastic time Asia, working multi-language with people from all over the world, while at the same time being able to contribute my own global POV along the way. I had the opportunity to work in 2 startups building products from scratch and managing designers from Taiwan and 4 provinces of China. After 4 years in Taiwan I decided to take the next step and move to United States. Currently my focus is designing On-demand Knowledge centered products, on both app and web platform, improving users productivity and learning with the help of AI.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Try to learn as much as possible, always keep yourself up to date and experiment a lot
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Good design makes life better, less stress less friction so people can focus in what is important to them. I think everyone should invest on good design, not just for aesthetics but to make life a little easier for everyone
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
To create a design system that will allow me to better manage design at scale
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
I don't think that there is a secret recipe, more of a gut feeling that can be verified with user success
Who is your favourite designer?
I think PhotoStudy is my greatest design, helping young people access help in Education has been great and rewarding.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Read a lot of books, not just about design but about strategy and business. Focus on the user with a lot of research. Test and iterate as much as possible, and repeat as many times as you can.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
My family and friends are my biggest supporters. My Mom could do anything she put her mind into, she was a great inspiration
